Warner Bros. Developing Krypton TV Series

David Goyer reportedly attached to develop new DC series

Warner Brothers' "Batman without Batman" series Gotham [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/tag/view/gotham] has divided critics but grabbed audiences in a big way. Now, the TV arm of DC Comics could be adding another prequel series to its booming roster.

Constantine, [http://www.bleedingcool.com/2014/10/27/man-of-steel-writer-david-goyer-attached-to-new-tv-show-its-name-krypton/] is attached to develop a new TV series adjacent to the DC Universe. It's title? Krypton.

No other information is available about the project, but based on the title, most are assuming a prequel series similar to Gotham but set on Superman's doomed homeworld at a point when it was significantly less doomed. The actual backstory of Krypton from the comics is somewhat muddied, with multiple different versions envisioned by multiple writers throughout the decades. In some variations, it is a scientifically-advanced utopia and/or eventual dystopia, while in other early versions it was depicted as an entire planet of superhumans.

If it comes to pass, Krypton would be the second Superman-related series on Warner/DC's TV schedule, with Supergirl [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/137546-DC-Comics-Supergirl-Coming-to-CBS] already heading to CBS.

I wonder how many DC super hero tv shows the market can support. We have to be getting close to the breaking point.

How are they going to portrait an alien world with TV Series budget? I will have to see it to believe it...

Not that I care about it so much, either way. After they pretty much confirmed none of their TV shows having to do with their inevitable cinematic universe, or themselves (outside of Arrow-Flash); so none of them actually builds into something else, I have little interest in investing in yet another TV series about young heroes origins...

David Goyer is behind it? Yeah sorry no.

I like Superman when he's... ya know Superman! Why the hell do I care to watch a series about the people of Krypton who have no super powers. I don't care about Superman when he's a baby and can't do anything. I care about Superman when he's an adult and fighting bad guys and aliens!

Why should I care about this show? Even if there was good content to be had exploring the world of Krypton, I simply cannot care about anything David Goyer has his hands on. A guy who has practically admitted that he simply does not get the super hero genre.

Hmm, I am uncertain if any TV series has the budget (at the start) to pull that off properly... :\

Not sure if I am interested either; how about something more original?

Yeah, uh, no sorry. Gotham might work because Gordon, the rogue's gallery, and hell, the city itself are established and beloved characters in the comics, and even in the films. Being a Superman fan, I never had much interest in Krypton outside of seeing as some weird banal and souless place depicted in the Donner films and sometimes in the comic books. Other fans might be into it, but I doubt I am the only going "huh?" and "why?".

I am wasn't too worried about over saturation of comic film and television productions until I heard this, and with David Goyer, that's just grounded glass frosting on this poison cake.

There's a lot of content they could use, not just stories like The Last Days of Krypton but
-They can explore things like Brainiac's origin
-The process of designer babies
-Class system
-Xenophobia
-The reason they don't leave Krypton and F*ck sh!t up.
-Political system
-We can see the story of the Nightwing

Goyer is only good/great when he has others reigning him in, otherwise we get MOS pretentiousness or Batman Begins bad dialogue.

In a big universe with inter-series continuity at its core, prequels are harshly restricted by later established events. Since the entire planet blows up killing everyone on the planet save one person who can't qualify as a character on screen, it will be hard to care about what happens before that. I liked what Man of Steel showed on Krypton, but that was already running a little too long.

Twist: Krypton was Earth all along!

Yes, I know they've done this in Red Son, but do you really think they'd go through the trouble of building THAT particular take of it? Just let me have my shitty Planet of the Apes reference!

I'm a huge Superman fan and I do love seeing Krypton fleshed out as part of Superman's mythology but, I really just can't see this working. If you set it around Jor El, then the destruction of Krypton is looming over everything. If you set it earlier in Krypton's past (something that has been done in comics for one-off stories usually tied to something Superman is dealing with now) it is in danger of being a generic sci-fi with Superman labels pasted on to things.

Ugh. Can't they release a TV series about the heroes themselves? I can't possibly be the only one that doesn't see the appeal in seeing "interesting thing before it got interesting: the TV series" ?

We already have Smallville. Just do a Superman TV series.

Seriously. He's kind of in the same category I put Nolan. They had one good run on Batman but either of them really shouldn't touch any other character ever again. Heck that is my biggest complaint with Batman v. Superman. Everything else is fantastic with that movie except for him.
