I had a discussion with my autoshop teacher concerning warning labels and what they actually do, he and I both believe if someone is so stupid they need a law or label to tell them not do something then those genes should be eliminated in other words that person should die before being able to reproduce which is what would happen in the wild but with modern technology and laws the idiot genes are making a return

Warning labels are there to prevent lawsuits.

If glue say's *aim away from face* you can't pour glue in your eyes then sue the company blaming them for not warning you.

Before the labels were there, you could.

Sure there are a few idiots that do it anyway, but I've always thought the warning labels were introduced to stop frivolous law suits.
Well that was summarised quickly.

The best warning I ever saw, however, was on a menu, warning that the mushy peas may contain traces of rocks.

Want to lose some more faith in humanity?

Think about it; for every single kind of warning label out there, someone had to do something that caused that label to be needed.

Warning labels are like the "Wet Floor" signs. If you slip you're either illiterate or retarded but at least you can't sue.

There's a cartoon channel that keeps warning me that Futurama isn't appropriate for children or kittens. That warning only started airing shortly after I got my kitten. I didn't listen and watched Futurama around her, now she destroys everything in the house.

But yeah warning labels are there for one thing only and that is covering your ass figuratively, possibly literally if you find yourself suddenly naked and the warning sign is big enough.

Warning labels on some things are definitely good to have.

Like on medications. If they aren't there, you could have a bad combination that could really harm you.

wrning labels are a mixture of lawsuits that have happened or lawsuits that the creators of the product think will happen
my favorite warning label is the one you see on hammers it warns you that you must wear safety goggles before use

Take them off when using the hammer, poke your eye and sue based on technicality, they didn't say you had to wear the goggles during use, only before.

Seeing as this pertains to both of your messages I decided to quote you both in the same posting. Years back I found a list of, supposedly genuine, crazy warning labels from around the world. And one of those labels, on a Swedish made chainsaw, read "Warning! Do not stop chain with hands or genitals!"

My father used to have a wooden ladder that, no shit, had a honest to God warning sticker that said 'Warning: Do not Consume.'

It was was an actual sticker placed by the manufacture.

Because, you know... people eating 10 foot wooden ladders is a huge concern.

I find that both horrible and hilarious.

Pretty much this.

And to add to the discussion, Warning Labels are just a back up, to prevent reflex decisions. If someone's never even heard of HCl acid, why do the deserve to be wiped out of the gene pool for mistaking it for water? (for instance)

Not everything is as apparently dangerous though. An Electric Fence for instance, might look harmless. Same with a floor, it might not look wet and slippery, so you put out a sign to show that it is.

But for most warnings it's to keep the lawyers at bay :p

Putting 'Highly Flammable' warnings on deodorant cans is just asking for trouble, imo.

OT: That's a little harsh :p We should be educating, and furthering the culture of common sense, rather than simply killing off idiots. Besides, we have the Darwin Awards for that...

I say some warning labels are handy for people who aren't familiar with the equipment in question. People have to be told not to put forks in the microwave somehow, and if it happens without ruining kitchen equipment, then all the better.

Of course, there are stupid ones too, like my airsoft gun that has the hilarious label "Warning: Made in Taiwan" (At least I think it was Taiwan) printed on it.
