Such as, the Vault doesn't exist and never had, Hyperion made up the legend and was clearly using you to dismantle Atlas' presence on Pandora. Your character in the story isn't important at all in the real story, you're just a tool for these big corporations, though they all have actual reasons for being there. (Lilth is looking for more Sirens. Brick's looking for his lost Sister. Mordecai wants to kill this guy who may/may not be his brother, too bad Scar killed him first. Roland wants revenge on the McCloud character you fight from Atlas.) It was essentially a game about Hyperion fucking with you.
Personally, I played this and Bioshock aside each other and I found this to have a much cooler twist, but that might be due to the fact I figured Bioshock's out by the 3rd/4th chapter.
Borderlands is just a gigantic bundle of fun if you pay attention.
