4 hours ago a man in my town was shot in what may be an IRA attack. Just 10 minutes ago someone posted

"wats new ppl gettin shot get over it the world aint ended we know a man got shot in buncrana my news feeds are nothin but man shot in buncrana !! Men get shot all time all over the place nothing new there end of now thank yous"

I pointed out she just complained that people who were shocked by a murder in a small relatively quiet town were posting about it. I was then immediately attacked by people for this. Anyway, was I right in doing this?

The article on the killing is here http://www.u.tv/News/Fatal-shots-fired-in-Co-Donegal/9f461570-ea80-4bf4-a5e5-ced374e19f90#.TzRSrjdJeYs

I don't see the comments you're referring to, but you were totally right to call Bullshit. Okay, yes, fine, in the grand scheme of things one guy getting shot is nothing, but it's pretty shocking for the locals (As it was for you, I'm sure, I'm Irish too and just heard about this...) and especially considering what might be surrounding this attack it's particularly shocking...

...I'm not gonna lie, I'm not even sure what the person was trying to say. But if they were basically saying "Pfui, no big deal that someone got shot. People get shot all the time." then I don't blame you at all for calling them on it.

Agreed. That's the kind of thing that makes me wonder what is wrong with people; if you can't be shocked at a human death, then what the hell can you be surprised by?

I thought the IRA thing all got sorted out back when Bill Clinton was God? Bugger.
Nope. I'm an American, but from my understanding the IRA dissolved after Ireland broke off, but some splinter groups remain active in Northern Ireland.

Comments like that bother me simply because it's disrespectful to the family and friends of the victim. It's like the old axiom goes, "if you have nothing nice to say, don't say anything at all." I don't expect people to go into mourning over the death of a complete stranger, but they could at least show a bit of sympathy if they're bothering to comment about it.

So yes, I'd say your response was justified.

Living in Oakland, CA, I think I know a thing or two about people being murdered ;)

Seriously though, from what I could decipher after bashing my head into the wall for 5 min, I think they were saying "why is everyone upset about one person being killed. People die all the time from gunshots all over. Nothing to see here, move on. Although it is a valid point, it is a dick comment.

I believe that every murder is shocking and sad. Even when I find myself getting angry at the "Missing white woman syndrome" that is so relevant in US culture (people of all different ethnicities, SES backgrounds go missing every day, why do we only focus on rich, young, white women?) I still need to remind myself that the individual being portrayed has a family who is very saddened by their passing.

In conclusion, I don't blame you for fighting back, I would have (and have done) the same thing.

Side note: Don't read the comments on the internet news. They make 4chan look like pillars of our society.

Sorry the comment I'm referring to was one of my "friends" on facebook.
The article was just linked to for some context

Love that! It's pretty scary reading them, I say clear of online news if I can now, and stick with a paper!

Also, is your username a Devo reference?

OT: You were perfectly right to call on that! They are just ignorant shits... although personally, as a rule, I don't engage and dialogue with people who write like that...! Uninteligable crap!

"nuff said fukn douse hi" I have no idea what that's supposed to mean and is to date the only time that I have felt compelled to point out as such.

Considering there might be IRA involvement I'd say that makes it kind of a big deal. Not sure how long ago it was but I thought they swore to officially stop the violence at some point. This could have bigger political implications than "ppl gettin shot", and even if it didn't we should never start viewing homicide as business as usual. The day we start saying murder is nothing new or not a big deal is the day we essentially say it's fine.

To answer your question: Yes, it is totally a Devo reference! 10 points to Griffindor!

Back on topic: I thought about this article more, and I think that the fact that the person could barely write coherent sentences should automatically signal the quality of the person we're dealing with.

God...much like the comment sections themselves...I've been sucked into this thread...arrrg!

In a big city, a man getting shot is nothing. Happens all the time. In a small town, a man getting shot is everything. Small town people are more closely-knit than any large community. For something to bring harm to one of their own is just that: Harm to one of their own. The person you called out needs to show some perspective.

Apparently most of my school disagrees with the escapist. Yesterday she was backed up and I was told that i am an asshole for pointing out what she said
