I liked it quite a lot when it came out, and there are still a few moments that stand out for me. However, it was nowhere near close to being the best game of the 'last generation'. There are many games out there that had better gameplay, story and above all, pacing, than MGS4.

P.S. This new Captcha is really atrocious.

I liked it, the gameplay was incredibly good but the story made no sense to me, a seasoned MGS fan.
but let me just stress. great gameplay. everyone seems to forget how good it was, if you just ignore the "win the game" weapons like the silenced dart gun, you'll find neat levels with a good deal of secondary paths and a set of gadgets that let you handle a situation in any manner of ways. there were some parts that dragged on for too long, and some sections that I wish just weren't in the game, but pretty much every game has those sections.
I wouldn't call it the best game of last gen, but its a solid 8/10 in my book.

In short: NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

In elaboration: Metal Gear Solid 4 is the Metal Gear Solid game that made me stop playing Metal Gear Solid. With the abysmal, insipid story line where no one acted like a human being, everything was contrived, the melodrama was chewable, the bosses were awful in every way shape and form; it wasn't enough that they were horrifically traumatized teenagers, but they also had to look like cheesecake models on top of it, and don't even get me started on the death of Naomi Hunter, dear lord I'm still pissed off about that, and the final scene with big boss and zero, the battlefield marriage proposal scene, Raidens entire story and every bit of dialog that came out of his mouth, fucking... ALL OF IT!

I finished the game, turned off my console and sold the game. It was the first time I had ever done that. This game was a turning point for me, because it made me realize that no matter how much you love something, its creator can destroy it right before your eyes all the while laughing in your face. In other words

I've never been a fan of these games in general so I barely played it (tried it at a friend's house). I'm sure it's a well made game, but it really didn't interest me.

The game had some interesting things to say about the 'war economy' and rise of private military companies but that's about it as far as story content goes. I sometimes have the feeling Kojima was in a bad place when he wrote it considering the relentless fervor of escalating events that had the entire Metal Gear lore imploded by the time the credits rolled. So much so that they can only create prequels from now on. It's like Kojima was also passive-agressive about people hating on MGS2 and thinking ''you want garbage here is your garbage''. Never before have I seen a creator wanting to end his series with such desperation.

Ofcourse we got more Metal Gears so maybe Kojima calmed down or popped some pills or something(or maybe just needed to pay bills) but the train wreck that was MGS4 is probably best left forgotten. For nostalgia sake the Shadow Moses level was pretty cool though, I'll give it that.

ID recommend that anyone who can, plays revengence. Yes, it has a silly title, but it is a far better game and story than 4, by miles,

The graphics seem sort of dull and greyed out and the controls and interface look somewhat archaic to what we got later in the gen, and the story still seems pretty convoluted.

So yeah, what do you think?
MGS4 still has the best TPS controls ever, it's not even close. MGS4 was great but needed more gameplay. If you count MGO as part of MGS4, then it very well may be the best game of last gen. No console shooter was more hardcore than MGO.

It was good, and having played it somewhat again recently, still is, but Dark Souls was the best game of last gen and if you disagree you're not a real gamer hurr durr.

Oh boy here we go. I can't really give an opinion on MGS4 because I don't own a PS3 or a console for that matter.

One of the best games that I've played was Witcher 2 Assassin's of Kings hands down.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say that The Orange Box probably dropped the mic on the 360/PS3/Wii era

edit- metacritic (yah, I know, but this is just for funsies) lists
1. GTA4 (ugh)
2. Super Mario Galaxy
3 GTA5 (ugh x2)
4. Bioshock
5. Uncharted 2 (wat.)
6. Orange Box
7. Arkham City
8. Mass Effect 2
(note that Twilight Princess shows up here, but it's the GC version)
9. Skyrim (uggggggggghhhhhh no)
10. Little Big Planet

also I noticed that games critics love thems some Zelda above all things. Seriously, half of everything in the all-time best rated list above 95 is a Zelda

/shrug. I liked MGS4.

I mean, I certainly wouldn't call it the best game of its generation (or even of its own IP)... but I still had fun with it. Hell, I even kinda liked the ridiculous over-the-top fanservice moments.

Granted, it probably helps that the MGS series is an IP that I've always looked at as kind of a joke. On the one hand it's always trying to be as hyper-realistic as possible... but on the other hand it's throwing bosses at you like an obese man in an EOD suit on roller blades that chucks bricks of C4. Also, the "Metal Gear" robots roar like dinosaurs. Why? Because who the hell cares.

As a fan of the MGS series and one who is very forgiving of its shortcomings, no. It's a competent game that changed enough of the series formula to make it interesting and fresh without feeling too different (which was a fear among many... and some felt the fear was realised), and most importantly, at the time FELT like a next gen console game (along with Killzone 2).

I still play it. I still think it's great. But I don't think it could even contend with other titles for "best of a generation". I'd rank The Last of Us and Dark Souls higher then it and if I was to choose, it would be Dark Souls for being the most... well, "game like" of all these games.

I bought it but really haven't gotten into it out of the terrorizing knowledge that it is difficult to get to save points. I love a game that is easy to save because, as a Dad of young kids last generation, I needed to be able to save as I never knew when I'd be interrupted next.
I'm fairly sure you can save at any point. Just not during cut-scenes..... Which means during most of the game haha. But still there are no save points. You can just save from the menu whenever.

OT: I really liked MGS4. It was one hell of an epic ride from start to finish. I definitely wouldn't call it the best game of the last gen though. Not even remotely close to being the best.

There's such a thing called "opinion", and everyone has one. You know.

If you ask me, MGS4 was, if not the best game of the generation, then one of the best. I love MGS4 about as much as I am starting to hate MGS5 (and it's not even released yet).

You'll hear a lot of people saying the countrary tho.
I'm inclined to agree, for me it was what originally sold me on my first PS3 along with GTA IV, to this day it still remains to be one of my favourite MGS games and in time I'll most likely be going back to playing it all over for nostalgia reasons.

Though like you said it is down to personal opinion and we are most likely going to see a lot of No's in here with reasonable examples but really I think the thread title was worded a bit wrongly.

I'd say the best game of last generation was Saints Row IV. No, it wasn't the Oscar-Bait game of last gen like Last of Us, GTA V, or the best selling like Call of Duty Modern Warfare or....Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2....

But you know what it was? The best VIDEO GAME. That was the most fun experience I have had in ages and that is what a video game is supposed to be. Why do you think Nintendo is still the greatest company in the industry?

It was good, but no.
Assassin's Creed 2, Dishonored, Portal, Portal 2, Left 4 Dead 2, Team Fortress 2, etc are all better games.
and those are just the first few the come to mind.

MGS4 wasn't all that great, the 'Killer excluisive definitive PS3 game' hype? That was just hype. The game is full of grating flaws the whole experience feels rushed and out of place within the entire Metal Gear series.
It's almost sad when Metal Gear Rising flowed with the series much better than MGS4.
I think if the fans would have let Kojima decide he wanted to make another Metal Gear instead of bombarding him with fucking DEATH THREATS we would have gotten a better game in its stead.

Weakest game in the series, not worth replaying as much as the others.

I recall I started playing and beating MGS4 around the time the whole lot of you were bitching about the ending of MassEffect 3, and I thought "Fuck ME3, MGS4 is awesome!"

but best game of the last gen? mmmm. No. Can't say that.

I'll come across as a pretentios douche, but it's too complicated. I think the best game is something very simple.

Hotline Miami.

Controls are simple. Plot is simple. the visuals are amazing. It would be my pick, that said... The Walking Dead, Paper's Please, FTL, Minecraft, all these indy games I think would deserve consideration before anything on a home console. They do so much more with so much less.

ironic you say this since someone on page one blasted MGS4 for being nothing but fanservice, meanwhile what is Saints Row 4 but a giant fucking love letter to the whole series?

and mind you, I say that as person that really dug both games as a fan of both franchises. I don't know how anyone that loves MGS could hate MGS4. The whole thing is just great.

As it came out in the same generation as Far Cry 3, Dark Souls, Bioshock Infinite, Metro Last Light and XCOM-Enemy Unknown just to name a couple of randoms ones off of the top of my head, I'm gonna have to say no to that one. It doesn't help that a lot of people don't like MGS, and even MGS fans don't seem to like 4 that much.

It's the worst one of them all. Yes, even worse than MGS2.
Since when has MGS2 been bad?
Since the game felt like a poor imitation of MGS1, and then at the end turns around and straight up admits this. MGS2 was Kojima saying he could never make a decent sequel to MGS1. So he just made it either for the sake of his own catharsis or to play a trick on his fans, but either way it was at the expense of the audience.

And the use of the codec in that game was fucking appalling.

And yet, still better than MGS4, since atleast it had focus... for a while.
