Was the water temple in Ocarina of Time really that difficult?

Not for me. I played it on the gamecube special edition and aside from messing with the water levels a few times when getting stuck I didn't have any trouble. It definitely doesn't stick out as any harder then any other dungeon.
even when you compare it to the earth temple? hell, getting 40 ruppees to buy the sheild is harder than the earth temple

The fight with Shadow Link was fun. It was just the rest of the bloody temple that was annoying as hell. Well, no, it was mainly just how obnoxious the boot thing was.

In retrospect though: I would mute my t.v. just so I didn't have to listen to Navi constantly shriek in my ear, "Hey! Listen! Over here you gangly-ponce!" Made me wish I could have shoved her in a jar with the other faeries in the SNES Zelda game and use her as a flashlight/distraction technique!

It's not hard at all. My biggest complaint was that a moveable block (where you play a song to make it move) was hidden in the shadows behind a chest. It was just very hard to see and kind of random too (poor game design honestly). The temple itself I found interesting and challenging.

I was about 7 and I had some trouble in finding my way around, but it wasn't hard.

If you take your time and pay attention to what's going on, it's not that hard to figure it out. I do think it's more confusing that most other dungeons though, including those from Twilight Princess.

If I recall correctly, I had more trouble with the Forest Temple back when I first played the game. It's all spooky and the music makes you go crazy.

No. There's a couple of easy-to-miss small keys (DAMN YOU CHEST BEHIND THE CRACKED WALL!!), the adjustable water can be a bit confusing the first time, and the iron boots are obnoxious. The 3DS fixed two of these. Now it's easier to tell where the water will go and the boots are items instead of gear (so you can equip them with the touch screen or a button...no need to pause). So, it's slightly confusing, but not that difficult.

Merely annoying & repetitive.
Agree...It is by far the most irritating dungeon in that game, and I don't think anyone could disagree. Hehe...this guys name is Arkvoodle...Right on.

Since I played it when I was like 7 yes it was incredibly hard. I also had trouble with Jabbu-Jabbu's belly.

not really, people just over-exaggerated. i still remember my first time, kicked its ass i did! only one that gave me trouble was the forest temple, but not cause its hard its because its BORING! nothing happens! like,at all...only the boss was neat. its puzzles consisted mostly of "push block A into slot B that is right infront of block A or down that corridor, yes that ONLY corridor..." oh and the wall masters putting you at the beginning of the dungeon...fuck me...

now that i think about it may be infamous for the MASTER QUEST version of it...got suck for a few days so i just glitched it threw the boss door after i got the longshot P:

It's difficulty is insanely exaggerated by people who played it as kids and found the puzzles confusing.

I personally like it the most out of all the temples in Ocarina of Time.

I never thought so. Like Navi hate, it's something I didn't know people thought until I started hearing it on the internet many years later.
