So... I've spent the past 4 days binge watching wrestling from 1993 in date order on the WWE Network. This is also the time WWF RAW first comes on the air.

It's arguably the strangest and best time to watch wrestling. The industry is just coming out of the "Golden Age" of cartoon characters and it's just like a bizarre fever dream.

I mean just recently I saw Shawn Michaels vs Kamala... That is to say an Effeminate pretty boy vs a savage cannibal.

The biggest bad guy in the world right now is an evil Japanese sumo wrestler, who has killed Hulkamania once and for all, and a former Narcissist with a bionic elbow has suddenly found his inner patriotism to challenge him.

There's an evil clown... A native american... Also the awesomeness of Repoman, who I shit you not, was in a feud with Randy Savage over the repossession of Repoman's hat.

Would I be re missed without mentioning an Evil Tax Agent tag teaming with a Multi-Millionare? It's brilliant social commentary.

All the while, you got an uncrowned people's champion in Bret Hart, who just won the King Of The Ring tournament and has gained the ire of fellow King, Jerry Lawler. Getting all Game Of Thrones up in this *****.

What anime can you say that can stand toe to toe with WWF 1993's level of strangeness?

You've clearly never seen Bobobo-bobo-Bobobo, have you? Because yeah, I can attest as a former wrestling fan myself that the 90's was really the best time to be watching the "sport"...but you'll be hard-pressed to find any series from any form of media that matches the insanity/strangeness of Bobobo.

A less strange - though still stranger than professional wrestling - series is called Nichijou.

I can not stand wrestling but i love hearing people talk about it with passion which a couple guys at work do.
It's like slipping into some alternate reality where nothing makes sense and you can't talk to those around you because they think you are the crazy one.

Puni Puni Poemi, the OVA 'sequel' goes even further than Excel Saga.
Pretty much anything by the same director is pants on head crazy.

It makes total sense that a few characters in the Saint's Row series use wrestling moves (or in some cases are actual pro wrestlers) because they're completely fucking insane. And so is pro wrestling. For true craziness, check out the wrestling promotions Kaiju Big Battel (it's sort of wrestling, but not really - it's kaiju putting on a fight, anyway) or DDT, which has had an inflatable doll star in some of its best matches.

If you like making fun of professional wrestling, you should probably check out littlekuriboh's The Mark Remark on his youtube channel. It's a regular rundown and "loving mockery" of wrestling stuff. He's said before that he really enjoys wrestling, but he also understands how dumb it is. xD If you can laugh at people making fun of it, I'd suggest checking out his routine. Hell I don't even watch wrestling and it's still incredibly funny to me.

Watch or read Kinnikuman. It's an anime that was literally inspired by that kind of out there wrestling.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kinnikuman

It's also one of the most iconic manga/anime series of all time. Head down to Shin-imamiya in Osaka and you'll see Mantaro Muscle all over the place. The author of Full Metal Alchemist even said it's one of her favourite manga of all time and that it greatly inspired her work. Pretty easy to see the humour and certain character designs in FMA that were clearly inspired by Kinnikuman.
