I love making my avatar resemble me, as not only does it make me more likely to keep it from dying but its also fun to imagine what I'd do in the situation they are in, for example wander around the wasteland in Fallout 3 shooting peoples heads off and then using the ripper to cut each individual limb off and then placing them around there body in a nice pattern (hope someone makes a mod enabling child killing).

But watching myself die does make me feel bit annoyed and makes me want to reload and kill the bastard that did me in in the most horrible way I can imagine

I made a relatively accurate version of myself for Mass Effect. That's about the only one I've ever been really happy with though.

I don't play many games where you have lots of character customization, but I sometimes make them look like me because, hey, seeing versions of ourselves do the badass stuff in games is always a good temporary boost in morale. Would I say I feel a connection to the character? That depends. If the guy turns out to be a voiceless go-fer for Organization Something-Or-Other, then probably not. If the character's personality and motivations are vastly different from my own opinions, then probably not. If the character resembles me in more than just appearance, then I probably would feel some connection, maybe it'd be like watching myself act in action movie, or something. As for seeing them die, it'd have to be a pretty brutal death scene to make me feel sorry for my digital self.

Maybe it's just because, mentally, I'm always aware that I'm playing a game, no matter how much immersion. Creating a digital look alike really only satisfies ego or personal fantasies when played in a game. And that's probably why so so many games have it now.

I just pick a preset face, maybe mess with the age slider a bit.(if possible, I try to go for something that's between "jRPG" and "FPS" age)
I want to create characters based on me, but I'm OCD and the last time I tried to make a character that looked like me, I spent 9 hours in the character creation screen and still wasn't happy with what I managed to create.(doesn't help this was in Oblivion, where the two character creation places don't have the best lighting and often a character gets these horrible spots on it's face/hands)

But when I DO get a character that looks like me, it's still not any different than any other character. Years ago, I made the choice to separate the computer and real life.(after a time where I was extremely addicted to gaming) I no longer care about any character in a game.

I usually create my avatars as I'd like to be, a little pathetic, but it's a way of living out impossible dreams.

I always try to make my characters look like me. Yes, it is disturbing to see my own head get blown off, but it makes me feel like I am in the game, seeing as I'm right there. ;)

I don't like spending time creating a character that looks like myself. I can never get it right, and I think it's a waste of time, since it's more fun to roleplay a bit, than pretend it's yourself. In fallout 3 I tried to make my character look arab, since I thought it was a shame that only hispanic, caucasian and african were the only options.

It took some time (didn't work out quite well, but my character does look "special" ;)) and since I put so much work into it, I refuse to wear a helmet that will cover up my arabian heroines stalwart face when she shoots the head of a Mutant

Interesting idea, though personally I like to live out impossible dreams with someone who doesn't look like me, but the most aesthetically pleasing thing that I can create, to my tastes.

Has anyone made a character look like someone else they know?

I don't really make characters to resemble my looks, but i usually go for the same sorta mould with every character. Black, muscular, short cropped hair.

If a game I'm playing has a character customization I do often try to make him look like me as much as possible. Partly from laziness but also because I admit I feel more involved if they look like me. Problem is, it's really difficult to actually make an accurate representation.

Take Mass Effect for example. I took a preset look than customized it to look like me as much as possible. But I didn't notice his nose was really big so I had to deal with this character having a monstrous nose every time the camera showed him from the side on. Was funny and irratating at the same time.

But whenever I make a female character to see the differences in dialogue I do try and make them look like people I know. But I get the same problem when I try to make myself.

God no. I make handsome space marine no 640000, with high intelligence and speech skills that kills (compared to mine ;P). It'd be weird, annoying and hard to play as me. 'Your character must rest, you have run for over 9 meters' would get old fast.

Anyway my server hates me. They just had a unanounced special event consisting over a whole horde of lvl 70 elite red orcs, elves and like 6+ special characters all right outside Stormwind. Seriously the entire city is now sealed off.
I don't know about colourblind, seems to work as an outfit, if you like that kinda thing. Does this getup just make it more hilarious when he gets eviscerated? Or does it make no difference at all?

It's odd because after level 40 almost all of my WoW gear always seemed to mesh really well, both colour and style wise. Maybe I was just lucky with my items, or maybe rogues and warlocks are easier to dress than plate wearers.

Has anyone made a character look like someone else they know?[/quote]

Oh, lots of times. A friend of mine and I both utilized Soul Calibur 3's create-a-character to recreate several of our friends and acting chums(we were theater students). And most of the time, those friends of ours really enjoyed seeing themselves smack each other about with a chain whip or steel fan, or whatever the hell else we felt like equipping them with. One girl just relished the sight of herself beating people up with tambourines.

I guess if one was really nasty, he could make a Fallout character look like someone he hates and purposely gets him killed in as many ways possible, but that's really the only other reason I can think of to make a character look like someone you know other than making your friends...unless you make a scantily-clad female warrior in the likeness of a girl you have a crush on/stalking, but if you do, then I would probably lump you in with guys who Photoshop pictures of their girlfriends.
