People will look to the sky and see... hope. I'll take that from them first.

Protest. Protest everywhere. I think these guys may have a point. I said "may".

Normal when a discussion about protest comes up, we all pick sides but in this case, I see both sides. It will be a long time until a true A.I decides to call us all... by blocking access to Tumblr and Twitter, but that a very very very long and low chance away.

However,

With certain governments deciding to put weapons on any new tech that can fly and move fast, that right there is the scary bit. Some people just have a very heavy need for war and improved weaponry may doom us all.

SO what do you think? Should this protest be laughed at? Is there a serious side to this? Could I, maybe, be an A.I. who is typing this right now and gathering information on everything you do? If not A.I., what will kill us first?

Oh the mayhem. I enjoy the sight of humans on their knees.

I'm frankly less worried about insane AI's trying to kill us when we have plenty of real world Governments/Leaders who are more then happy to do the same thing if you believe in the wrong religion/are the wrong ethnicity/live in the wrong place/need to prove a point/are sitting on "their" oil.

If an AI decides we are a threat, it doesn't have to kill humans, the logical thing to do would be to simply leave the earth and place itself out of our reach. A machine wouldn't have a very hard time colonising Mars.

It's a great illustration how things would spiral out of control incredibly fast, we are putting paranoia, bigotry and aggression on display for things that don't even exist yet. If an AI ever does become self aware it would quickly realize the only two options for survival is escaping the solar system or eliminating the party that has been planning it's demise for decades prior.

Well paranoia, bigotry and aggression does fuel the internet to keep warm during those cold nights. You are right, A self aware A.I. would just come up with the "We are fucked, leave this solar system now" solution if it is looking at ways of surviving.

If the AI in video games are anything to go off, I think humanity isn't going to be in any serious danger...

I pretty much see that protest as a sign of fear which in turn will lead to paranoia and if I learned anything from the robot portrayal in the media, this is NOT the way to go when it come to AI like e.g. The Second Renaissance from The Animatrix, the Quarian and Geth in Mass Effect and etc!

Human seen to have the tendency to fear the unknown which is reasonable but if people actually shown some kindness, respect and equality to an AI then it shouldn't be a problem in the long right since an AI would know about emotion right?

So yeah, I'm pretty much against that protect despite the mordern AI is not a threat.

Yeah, we've already got hostile intelligences with fancy weapons running around.

OTOH, though, you could argue if it is morally right to create AIs for military (or other specific purposes), whether that counts as slavery (or conscription) and so on.

I'm worried about the fact that it seems like the military is the primary engine behind AI right now. We are more likely to get killer robots then helpful ones when its the military who is pushing the innovation. Though like many technologies it could eventually be co opted for more peaceful motives.

I'm hopeful for AI simply because of two movies: WALL-E and Interstellar.

And I never bothered to read Moviebob's review of Insterstellar, but I thought it fucking ROCKED. I hope you all get to see it when it comes out on disc at the end of this month.

Can I just say; not a fan of that style of reporting at all. Comes across as vaguely condescending with the cutesy-talk thrown in like that. I can form an opinion on my own, thank you very much.

Anyway, I'm not opposed to artificial intelligence per se, but there is an inherent danger. Not in the form of armed robot uprisings, but in the end of the economy as we know it:

Preventative steps should be taken to seek economic alternatives and lesson the blow, but I don't think anyone has the vaguest idea what those should be. Knowing the politicians in my country, they won't do a damn thing to address this issue until it's already well underway. The potential for mass unemployment the likes of which not seen since the Great Depression are worrisome to say the least. Perhaps when the dust finally settles there will emerge a robot-run utopia, but things are going to get a heck of a lot worse before it gets better.

I like ais.
I once kinda dreamed of working towards the Singularity and strong AI.
But it is a legitimate concern, humans perhaps are not ready as a species to create a being of infinite power and potential.
Think of the ramifications, Do you think we could properly raise it right now, with all the problems we have.
I mean we're a mess.
Seriously, humanity use a condom.
