Well, it is possible to tell when a person is sincere in their appreciation through their actions, the choice of words, the tone of voice, but in your case, I think most of those do not apply. Since you have no reason to feign gratitude, I would expect that is real. Generally though, a few words are all you need to express gratitude, yes.

Having few to no friends or suffering a lot of bullying as a kid can just make you appreciate your real friends all the more when you're older, assuming you make the effort to address whatever was causing you problems in the first place.
