By the end of the series, there's been facist goverments, horryfying monsters, baby factories, zombie viruses, the collapse of civilisation, all fuel on the planet vanishing, two species and 99% of the human race dead, the main character's father and surrogate brother right in front of him, and a million other things. But after over 100 years of near-constant war and suffering, it's finally over. People can rebuild in peace, and forge a better world from the ashes of the old.
