Grace locked the door to the med-bay and instructed Makoto to lay down on a bed.

"Wait, what? Shut down my soul? Wouldn't that kill me?" Erica asked with a confused tone, then she realised something and her face sadened somewhat. "And for this this to work, two more creatures will have to die? ...I don't like the sound of that."

Makoto laid down. Her tail was moving anxiously.

Grace took Makoto's right arm and started channeling magical energy into it. She felt the same heat as before. "What do you feel?" Grace asked.

"Feeling kinda hot right now, so haven't got that sorted yet."

"I doubt it. Tophat would not do it if there was a risk of harming you. And as for these-" she lifted the soul gem and nodded at the snake. "The person in the gem was a bandit, vicious, merciless scum. His life, and the life of that vile serpent, are a small price to pay."

Grace nodded and tried something else. The heat in Makoto's arm grew worse and spread to her shoulder and chest.

"It's not working. It's getting hotter and spreading."

"Hmm..." Grace frowned and tried something else. The heat seemed to continue to spread, but was not as intense. "Keep telling me how you feel." Grace said.

Two people already died to sustain my exsistance... How many more will need to die?

"It's cooling down now, not as hot as before, but still spreading. I can put up with it."

"The bandit is already dead. Look at it this way. If his soul is not used to give you back your future, then it will be used to renew the enchantment on my war axe. Which would be preferable. And as for the snake... I believe it was you who once asked me how a vampire drinking blood was any different from a human eating an animal. Well, I ask you, how is using the snake in this fashion any different from you eating a piece of meat?"
