Since you like analogies so much, here's one of my own: A burgler breaks in into a house, steals what he's after and leaves. But in his hurry he knocks over a burning candle, setting the house on fire and killing those inside.
Did he directly kill the people inside the house? No. Is he responsible? Yes!" Erica retorts. "And did Nu actually kill me? ...No."

It could have happened even without his actions. He might have made it easier, but is hardly responsible for their own bad decisions, which could have had the same result no matter what he did.
