James was sitting in the Communal Quarters on his bunk, carrying out some maintenance on his weapons that he had recovered before leaving the airport. His mood, which had been foul then, had only deteriorated over the last couple of days. Hundreds of millions dead. Erica critically injured. Tophat lost to the sea. For years he had been developed into a living weapon, the things that had made him a good man gradually eroded away to be replaced with grim determination and efficiency. He was engineered to fight for the innocent, whatever the cost. And now, despite all the sacrifices he had had to make, he had still failed them all. And as if that were not enough, he was obviously coming down with some illness too. He felt like shit, and was beginning to look tired and gaunt as well. Hearing the sound of fighting outside the ship he glanced up and grimaced, before snapping his weapon components back together and rising from the bed with a hiss of discomfort.

Maka and Valentine were fighting outside, as Maka's Scythe came into contact with Valentine's claw sparks flew off.
