"When taking a ship, it's not often the best strategy to just sail into range and let fly with the broadsides as soon as you have the elevation." He said after a moment. "Sometimes, it is best to hold back, guage the skill of the enemy commander, see whether they attempt to close with you or favour their own cannons. Only when you know what you are facing do you act on it, and then you can move into close range, to hole their hull and mow down their crew." As Etna entered, he lowered his voice.
"In fencing as in ship to ship combat, you can learn much about your opponent in the early moments of a fight, and again, that can be very useful later. Do you see what I mean?"
