Jacques approached the gurney with dread, slowly, and pulled one corner of the sheet back, to expose Kanji's pale face. His shoulders slumped, and he closed his eyes in sorrow.
"Merde. Another life, snuffed out." He whispered, opening his eyes to gaze down of the body again. "I did not know you well, Kanji, but you presented yourself as a good man, honest and brave. You deserved more time than you got." He stayed quiet for another minute, before speaking again.
"There is little that I can say for you, but this. I doubt the others will have done it, and do not know if you would even have wanted it, but feel free to ignore it if you wish." He bowed his head, and began speaking the Christian last rites in a solemn, hushed voice. When he finished, he laid a hand on Kanji's shoulder, before covering his face again.
"Recquiescat in pace." He whispered, before turning away and walking back out into the corridor.
