The first thing I was aware of was a flash of searing pain throughout my entire body, followed by a heavy impact as I struck the ground, hard. I opened my eyes, expecting to see nothing, that the burning light had blinded me. Surprisingly, I saw a blue sky, with moderate cloud cover and bright sunlight. As I struggled to my feet, I glanced around, seeing a circle of rubble that appeared to be all that remained of the house I had intended to make my last stand in.
The rubble was filled with charred skeletons, presumably the remains of the creatures I had been swarmed by. Outside of the rubble there was nothing but lush green grass, and a low forest that stretched into the distance on one side, a far cry from the shattered suburbs where I had been fighting for survival. Checking myself I found the marks where teeth had riiped through my leather jacket and shirt, but my flesh was unmarked. Nothing I could see made sense. From the moment that jet had screamed overhead it was as if I had been transported to a different world.
A quick check of my compass revealed that some magnetic interference would prevent me from using the poles to navigate. In the distance however, I could see some kind of commotion, on the ground and in the air. I could hear the clanking of heavy machinery and strange voices. Without anything better to do I decided to investigate. Checking that my kukri and grenades were still attached to their rig, I reloaded my revolver from the bag at my belt and began to move, staying low to avoid detection.
