Well, it seemed that things were over. Joel had gotten away, and without his help the world was doomed. But Mat knew that wasn't so, and it frightened him. The dice in his head were still rattling away. The hadn't even slowed. Something bigger, worse than the potential end of the world was upon them. Either Joel was bluffing, or whatever was coming next was truly terrifying.

Fain stepped out into the streets of the city. Everywhere, people were huddling around their boxes, listening for news of their demise. He felt their emotions. Fear. Hatred. Misery. It all felt so good. He wanted to laugh and begin the slaughter right now. But he restrained himself. The fool, Joel Calley, the thing in the library had named him, was going to destroy the world. Why, he didn't know, or care. It didn't matter. He wouldn't allow this world to be destroyed, at least not until he had killed the fool. The dagger at his belt seemed to glimmer when he thought that. Yes, it longed for his blood. It longed to kill the master who had escaped. Soon. Padan Fain abruptly turned down one of the streets, toward the building these people called "the Pentagon."
