He was in the building when the order to execute was given. He was actually with the kill team, they were arrayed behind him now with the Myrdraal. Every one of them, almost a dozen in all, had the same sort of paranoid, murderous look about them. It was easy enough to corrupt these men. The threat of their world's destruction made them emotional, vulnerable. Getting men to this state of corruption normally took days at least, this job had been reduced considerably. Killing the men responsible for destroying the world had been fun and easy, though somewhat unsatisfying.
"Mr. Mordreth." One of them said. Mordreth? was that the name he had given here? "We should be leaving. There's a gunship right outside waiting to take off."
Padan Fain turned around, the men flinched. Good. "You all know your orders?" He asked. They nodded, every one.
"After you leave we are to say that a man named Matrim Cauthon came in and killed many of the defense department's senior officers. He was a tall man with brown hair, a green coat, and black, broad-brimmed hat. He came in and out before much could be done about it."
Excellent. The trap has been set. "Wait until the bodies are found. It shouldn't be long now." Fain said, as he made his way to the exit. Three of the men went with him. "One more thing," he said before leaving, "If you see the fool, don't kill him. He's mine."
