I don't do online gaming. I've tried but it seems I either get stuck with people cheating or complete asshats to play against or with. I was just sitting here bored, Squidbillies had just ended (and if you don't watch it, what is wrong with you lol) so I decided to try out the new Castlevania game on XBL.

I go in, I have my mic set and it puts me into a random game. All of a sudden I hear the usual 12 year old voice going "We got a noob here. They're gonna fuck it up for all of us." I ask if that was about me (notice I didn't add "kindly asked") and was told yes. I ask this master gamer of the how long he has been playing games, specifically Castlevania.

Apparently since he has been playing all the way back since the last DS version, he knows all about Castlevania since "AVGN said the second one sucked, so playing those dumbass old ones don't count".

So apparently, since I don't spend my life signed on to XBL and play multiplayer, I am no longer considered a gamer and am a noob. 30+ years of gaming and I'm no more of a gamer than someone who plays only Farmville. Actually less of one because Farmville is online. (And please don't post the Extra Credits and Yahtzee thing about the term gamer. I use it and like it, to want to be called something else because of supposed stereotypes is just wanting to be accepted by the majority)

I used to think a lot of what people said about the online community was hyperbole, but damn, once I experienced it for myself it makes me worry about my gaming future. Since so many developers are worrying more and more about the online multiplayer instead of the single player experience, how long will I still have games I can play without having to deal with the asshats online?

Yeah there's plenty of them who are stupid...

Generally a shotgun to the face shuts them up.

I almost always go in with friends now, so we don't have to deal with idiots.

I had something kind of similar last night whilst playing Reach. Now I'm not really the deathmatch type, I much prefer to play co-op if I can but I thought I would try a few deathmatch matches to see what they were like.

So I jump in a random lobby, enjoy a few nice games then I enter a new lobby and when prompted to choose what type of game I click on the CTF 1 flag option. I haven't played Halo for that long so I have no idea what all the options are yet, this 'person' then opens up a torrent of abuse upon everyone in the lobby just because we selected the CTF game. "You're all retards, don't you know that mode is f**king shit" You get the picture...

How long has halo been out now? A week or so? Yet some people just expect everyone to know everything instinctivly, and play like we have had the game for years, it just infuriates me.

Needless to say I spent the entire game just trying to hunt him down and kill him ^^

(I would just like to add that the other 7 or so games I played I had a very nice time with some nice players)

Ugh, Halo Reach needs to sort out and clarify its play lists. I wanted to play NORMAL CTF once, but ended up playing crappy one flag. I like Reach, but its set up weird. (Esp since most objective games end in draw sinces its best of 4 with no tie breaking things)

Wait, this kid hasn't played SotN? That's...basically a staple of Castlevania games these days.

I've been playing MMOs for years now and I can safely say that for every nice person you meet online, there are at least 100 dickheads.
I remember the days when "Noob" was spelled "newbie" and literally meant someone who'd only been playing for a short time. We used to look out for them in the old days- give them help and equipment and advice on playing.

I actually quit playing Everquest 2 some time ago as, in addition to some gameplay changes I didn't like, the community had gone to shit. The players had been encouraged to become so elitist that if you didn't have specific equipment and had your character set up in a very specific way, you literally could not get a group for love nor money.

I'm still playing Star Wars Galaxies, where I'm fortunate to be in a guild of very similarly minded people who are very laid back about their gaming, but this thread calls to mind an incident two of my veteran guildmates encountered at the weekend.

My buddy, a bounty hunter, decided to collect a PvP bounty on a relatively well-known player. Usually, other players can't get involved in player bounty hunting, but this guy was stood in a public place flagged for PvP and therefore open to attack by anyone.
My buddy called in a guildmate, and the two of them beat the living shit out of him. The guy then comes back, complains that they're "noobs" and proceeds to flag himself for PvP again in the exact same place.

So they killed him again.

And again.

And again.

All while being called "Noobs".

The thing I love about MMOs, is the way that some people are so convinced of their awesomeness by being a top level character on a game, that they seem to perceive time, space and reality as something completely different to the rest of us.

To be fair, the online version of an game is typically a vastly different ballpark. I've played games for over 80% of my life but I'll suck for a while whenever I start playing a game online.

While I do rag on people sometimes, it'll generally be with good cause. Let's use Monster Hunter Tri as an example.

With Tri, you fight with 3 other players on whichever quest is picked and it will continue until either time runs out, the quest is complete or there are 3 deaths, that is 3 players can die one time or one player can die 3 times. I play around the event and the 5 & 6 star rank quests which are the highest ones available and you usually need a minimum of 40 ranks to even join one. The thing is every few games I'll meet somebody who apparently doesn't yet know how to play the game properly, they will come in wearing mismatched armour that grants no skills and half the time with a switch axe and you can just SEE it coming that they will die several times during the quest and probably mess it up for the other 3 players.

I don't mind people with lower ranks being bad as it comes with the territory but I take exception when somebody who has to have been playing at least 100 hours or more by that point comes in and ruins the quest for the other 3 players involved. It's one thing to call whatever you're playing a game if you're the only one affected that I don't mind, it's entirely another thing if you die a third time just as Deviljho is limping away with 10% health left to lick his wounds and thus denying 3 other players any reward after their work on the quest.

In all seriousness, I really don't blame you.

I get called an, and I quote, "Ep1c F41L n00b LOLOLOLOLOLOLOL" every time I rear my head on Red Dead Redemption's online, just because I don't have the time to invest in getting some stupid zebra-donkey or gold guns (which look stupid anyway). They'll usually heckle me for a while until I get bored of ignoring it and blast the name-caller's face off moments later. Repeatedly.

I'll admit its pretty bad everywhere. I've seen people kicked and abused on L4D because one player can lose the entire game for everyone, I was once kicked because by a random dude who called a vote the moment he jumped on (and all you need is 2 votes to kick so long as the 4th guy doesnt vote).

I'm having no trouble on TF2. I also suspect that its not AS bad on PC as it is on Xbox.

You want one of the worst online communities? Yes, even worse than Halo.

Heroes of Newerth. The amount of elitist pricks on there are staggering. One wrong move, one accidental misplacement, one missed call, one death EVEN if it was your team's own damn fault will be greeted with "OMFG stop feeding U n00bz u suk u should uninstall".

Opposing team won't hold back in flaming either, consistently typing things like "Hahahaz so ez" or "such bads" or "noob", even after you kill them repeatedly.

Though it makes stomping all over their faces oh so satisfying.

I completely agree buddy, the amount of people who call you a fag for not sitting at the back of the map sniping (badly)is ridiculous.

Modern Warfare is a good example, if you don't have a specific weapon set up, perk set up and equipment then your entire team will call you a fag, boot you or shoot at you. Ironically it was the opposite in Halo 3, if you had a certain weapon or piece of equipment then people would kill you for them

Left 4 Dead is another ***** online, the amount of times I have been kicked within 20 seconds is stupid and the number of people who exploit glitches and cheat...

Eugh... I hate all of this crap and for the one good game I have there are so many which fill me with hate. I remember a time when video games were fun, mystic and where the only person you hated wanted to rule the world. What happened?

So online gaming sucks because stupid spoiled brats are, in fact, stupid?

Seriously, if you're on Xbox Live, start a party and invite friends. No friends online? Start a party anyway so that you don't have to hear the stupid kids.
That's not the problem though in some games, you get booted or betrayed half the time for your weapons use (or lack of)

The real solution is to not play online

That's why I do pretty much 80% of my online gaming with a fixed group of clanmembers. L4D with randoms...the idea alone, no thanks. TF2 is also a lot more fun when you can crack inside jokes.

As far as gaming communities go, TF2 has one of the best ones. I think it's the style of the game that attracts a crowd with a cool mindset.

its funny really, they start out complaining that you suck too hard, then they complain that you betrayed their team because you switched sides, then they complain because you're pulling off a 100+ sniping spree on their heads.

I do the majority of my gaming with friends nowadays, i used to leave it to chance but i had too many moments like you mentioned.

my faveroute was a L4D one where some guy was being an absolute arse over the mic and in-game, we got to the last level of the hospital level and he hid under the stairs because he thought hed be invincible.

well hey, a tank just crouches and starts beating the crud out of him and him and his pre-pubescent voice are screaming over the mic "Save me, why wont you help me you assholes" with me and three teamates standing behind the tank just watching with a smug satisfaction.

it's for people like these that god invented teabagging.

The only good "online community" is one made up of your friends. Real ones, people you've actually met "in real life." A LAN set up with friends (preferably all in the same room) is the best way to experience multiplayer content. Online play is terrible and people in general just suck. I play videogames to get away from dealing with idiots, online gaming defeats that purpose and has every single time I've tried it at the suggestion of friends. One friend said "try Diablo 2 online." I had no sooner created a character than some idiot dumped game-breaking duped equipment on me. I tried to explain that I am a "legit" player who will not play with or deal in duped items, and just wanted to try and get into the game (I love Diablo LAN and single-player.) So of course he called me a SOB NOOB, and started spamming on the talk function. Of course I could ignore him, but I chose to ignore the whole D2 online community (sorry to those few of you who may have been cool, but I doubt your existence.) No matter what genre of game, or rules set down by admins and such no other game has ever been different. Going all the way back to my first foray into MMO, Neverwinter Nights. Not that one, the old one on the old AOL based on Unlimited Adventures. Online gamers even sucked in the days of the 19.2 modems. The only recent shooter to be even remotely good multiplayer is Borderlands, and that game sucks. The only thing that makes it playable or bearable in anyway is that it didn't ignore split screen gaming. Some of us have actual friends. Not a friends "list."

Oh, and most of the dislike of Castlevania 2 was based upon the whiners "its too hard" complaints. C2 is the most hardcore and the franchise has not been as good since (although 3 was pretty solid.) I've only watched 1 "AVGN" "review" (production... whine... whatever he calls it) it was of TMNT for the NES. That guy is a wuss, that game rocked and was no harder than others of it's time (on par with Rygar and such.) AVGN, that should provoke scorn right there.

Meh, you're always gonna get gob-shites online. Something about being hundreds and hundreds of miles away from the person they're insulting seems to make a certain type of person grow a pair. Just use the 'mute' button, and let them all squawk away to their hearts' content.

On a slightly different tack, try playing game modes that aren't team based. I was playing Reach online last night, and deliberately stayed away from things like CTF and Team Deathmatch because I didn't know the level layouts. Chances are I'll stay playing Free-for-All (or whatever Halo calls it, 'Rumblepit' or something) until I know the levels like the back of my hand and have picked up a few tricks (cheap or otherwise). That way when I start playing team based games my performance doesn't give them anything to chirp about.

[sub]All hail the Mute button. The Mute button is king.[/sub]
