We hate things because they're popular

It may seem that we just hate all things popular, but in reality it just means that there are more people aware of it's existence, therefore more chances for them to voice their opinions about it, and more chances for us to hear those mixed opinions.

Popularity doesn't always mean likable... For example, and a horrible one at that, Hitler is popular only because of the bad things he did back in the day.

Well,
-18.Everything that can be labeled can be hated.
and,
-19.The more you hate it, the stronger it gets.

But why do we hate everything popular? Maybe cause we (as in people who enjoy nerdy things) constantly get/got labeled and made fun of by the "popular" kids in high school, and it comes out as a deep and utter hatred for everything mainstream.

For me, the paradox of liking something because it's good vs. liking something because it's cool lies in the fact that mass popular opinion can be so influential (partly due to oversaturation of technology and democratization of the internet) the the line between the two become blurred.

Eg: I no longer know if I actually "hate" Nickelback because it's such a popular opinion or because their music simply doesn't affect me. This is another issue all together, but I think that they're so despised more because of what they represent than because of their artistic credibility. (This theory could stem into a debate about what constitutes free thought and how taste and opinions are formed.)

Me too. My instincts were right. It does indeed "blow."

And the reason there are so many "TWILIGHT BLOWS" threads on this site is because most people here are not the aimed for demographic. It's a saga aimed at air-headed teenage girls. As for Avatar: Halo Fanboys. What's wrong with something that's similar to Halo?

Star Wars wasn't a half billion dollar abortion. Not even if you adjusted for inflation several times over.

Well, I made myself read Twilight and thought it was pretty terrible except for one part at the end where Meyer pulled off an action/chase scene fairly well.

Anyways, I agree with your point, which is why I just form my own opinions before saying anything about something. However, I still take unpopular things with caution, but I am not biased against them.

I've had people turn to me and say "I don't like [insert band name] because they're way too popular now. They were better when no one knew about them."

That annoys the crap out of me. I mean really? music gets popular cause lots of people like it, and you stop liking it cause you're no longer a minority in liking it?
