I am sick of playing games, and not feeling a thing.

Over the years, I have loved the exhilaration of watching revenge-driven plots like in Tarantino movies (Death Proof, Kill Bill, and especially Inglorious Basterds).

You spend enough time with characters to get to know them, side with them, whatever happens it's an emotion nonetheless.

So I give this challenge out to the gaming community for discussion - essentially one day I would like to play a game, and feel as interested and emotionally invested as I do in the fantastic revenge-driven plots in Tarantino films. If you have any suggestions, please do let me know.

PS: I will acknowledge the recent Xbox Live arcade game, "Limbo", as I found that a piece of art, and quite powerful.

Edit 1: I apologise for the double post, my browser died.

Already emotionally invested in every main character in Mass Effect. I care about what happens to them.

Same with John Marston in Red Dead Redemption, I found myself sympathetic to his problems and felt like he deserved better. I would have sided with him on almost every argument he made against another character.

I agree. Sort of. Kinda.

Revenge is a theme that is often used in games, probably even overused. Yet I cannot think of a single revenge-based plot that has managed to trigger any serious reaction on my part.

Then again, none of those Tarantino movies managed to make me feel anything either.

Wait, you're using Tarantino films as examples of emotional investment?

SAY WHAAAAAAA???

OT: I agree with Polaris19 with Red Dead Redemption and John Marston, thats the only game I can think of where the ending(ish) affected me. (Seriously, how depressing is that ending?)

Arcanum, potentially.

Iji, which is even freeware.

Also? Planescape: Torment. Many, many times over. Really, that game is amazing. Oh, and Terranigma is fairly great too.

Mind you, none are revenge-driven. You could half-make a case for Iji, but mostly, no.

Personally never found Tarantino films a source for that sort of emotion, but I do see where you're going with that.

As it is, Bioware satisfy my emotional connection with characters, as did Final Fantasy when I first played them (VII-IX that is)

I'm sure there's more, but I CBA to go back through my game collection.

Personally, during scenes in Tarantino films where people get what they deserve in an incredibly violent fashion, I feel a great deal of satisfaction. That is probably as detailed a description I can give to you.

If you want more detail as to that satisfying feeling, perhaps watch a few old Westerns, like "The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly". I believe Tarantino got his inspiration from westerns (in Kill Bill it is arguably a bit more obvious).

Ahh, Mass Effect 2. Yes, I did feel something. Red Dead Redemption, I also felt a great deal of sympathy for Marston. Not going any further than that on the plots of the games. The intensity of emotion was nowhere near that of the aforementioned movies though.

Admittedly, I could be more attuned to this particular type of emotional response, but I would just like to see it in a game.
