So, some allegations have been made about a woman who made a game and a guy who makes a living talking about games. As it stands, they're probably just about the only two people in the whole mess who know all the facts, but when did facts ever not get completely flattened by the turbocharged snowball of gossip and 'righteous' anger on the internet (apart from, maybe, on this website, what now feels like a very fucking long time ago)?

I don't actually want to talk about this particular story, despite it being the catalyst for my rambling today. I don't want to discuss it, not because I have any interest in suppressing one side or the other, but rather because I give precisely zero fucks, and that there is already a prominent thread lodged permanently at the top of Off-Topic at the time of writing where it is being discussed at length, by many people. I see no need to add to that.

No, what concerns me more is this is just one more (particularly rancid) example of just how rotten these forums, and much of gamer culture on the internet, has become of late, in regards to the standard of debate. Understand, my problem is not with having more serious debates about things concerning the industry and beyond. Hell, I'm one of those strange and unnatural creatures that actually likes public speaking. There's little I enjoy more than a good verbal throw down, and there are certainly several serious discussions that I feel the games industry and the larger society it reflects need to be having. Consumers like myself (and I'm assuming you as well if you're reading this) are part of that industry, just as we are all part of society. So, we should be having these discussions as well. No, my problem is with basic standards of decency. My problem is with how combative, counter-productive, and downright poisonous the level of discourse in these issues on sites like this has been allowed to become. My problem is with how anyone supposedly intelligent enough to operate a computer, could think that responding to dissenting opinions or to people known for holding dissenting opinions, with slander, derogatory personal insults, death threats, threats of physical and sexual violence, and threats towards family, are ever okay, for anything!

My problem, is that somewhere down the line (and I'm not quite sure when or how), these issues have become hijacked by bullies and morons, who are unable to express a single thought in their heads without immediately devaluing themselves and anything they involve themselves in through a complete lack of manners.

It's been bubbling up within me for some time now, to hit back out at all the things and all the people that are making me feel ashamed to be here, to tell you that what you believe and how strongly you believe in it, pales into insignificance beside just how much you're embarrassing yourselves with your behaviour. However, I've decided that doing that wouldn't be a good idea (or rather, doing just that, as I kind of did just say it, didn't I).

Making a thread to simply vilify people would make me no better, and would be counter productive to what I want to see. I'd be making a thread where the only discussion value would be inherently hostile, and all it would accomplish would be to add fuel to the fire while simultaneously putting myself in the firing line. I don't want to do that. I'm not a fucking masochist.

So, instead, I thought I'd try something a little more practical. I thought I'd ask the users of these forums, those of you I still have faith in, as well as those who I may yet be proved wrong about, to each post an idea for a thread they'd like to see come up more often. That'll be the discussion value for this thread, with everyone bringing something fresh and constructive to the table. I'll even start things off with a few ideas of my own:

- 'What do you think Marvel will try next?'

- 'Americans... explain the appeal of Grits to me.'

- 'If you became the CEO of a major gaming publisher of your choice, who would it be, and what would be the first thing you'd change (you can only pick ONE thing, no cheating :p)?'

- 'If the date of your birth became a national holiday in your honour, what do you hope you'd be remembered for?'

- 'Baby Seals win at cuteness... Discuss!'

Answers to any and all of these topics will also be welcome in the thread. Who knows, perhaps this thread will inspire some users to actually make threads around subjects they or somebody else have suggested? Perhaps this might even become a trend that extends beyond the Escapist, promoting variety, civility, and good times across the Nerdiverse? Perhaps the general temperature of the internet might be persuaded to cool it's fucking jets just a little bit? I'm not reaching for the stars, but you never know...

Let's at least try not to make utter twats of ourselves in this thread. That'd be a start.

ohh Lord....

yes in regards to "that" issue it is rather a clusterfuck isn't it? even by the standards of what I'm used to...very nasty

you know usually I would be against ghettoising certain topics of discussion...and still am, but I think we've reached the point where we need to chill the fuck out and leave it alone

and yes I do mean the people starting such threads with little discussion vaule weather their intentions are good or not...unless you've got a real point to make then you know...mabye don't

as of now by the power vested in me I proclaim a 1 month ban on gender threads

that'll fix it

This thread gets all of my approval.

I for one would like to see more threads focused on the positive times you have had with games, not the negatives. Sharing your cool stories of finally conquering Pikachu and Snorlax in Dark Souls, that epic match of DOTA 2 where you and your team pulled off a crazy win out of nowhere, those kinds of things.

Also more of a focus on creativity. Some kind of user-generated content forum to expand on the dead User Reviews would be wonderful. There are a huge number of wonderfully talented people on this website, and giving them a chance to share their work would be awesome!

Also baby seals are the cutest of the cute, I want a plushie one right now!

Amen, sir. I've wanted to make a thread somewhat like this one for a while myself.

But I guess that means I can't post.

:D

explain the appeal of Grits
Well, it's like cornbread oatmeal. Except not?

Er, yeah, you'd be better off with a Southerner explaining that one.

To be honest, I'd like to see more discussion of game mechanics. Except in a positive or at least constructive manner for once, instead of the usual "Regenerating health sux!" we seem to get nowadays.

There are so many things I could say about why I think the mechanics of Sonic Generations combine to make something close to the perfect 3D Sonic game, but my outlet? Eh, I could make a thread that might get four or five replies, because nobody else cares about Sonic? I dunno.

Even from a negative standpoint, I love to talk about things like "how Resident Evil 6 does a lot of really stupid things" or "how Final Fantasy XIII hates the player", not that those aren't preaching to the choir on websites like this, but even those discussions devolve into people getting far too defensive because you're "insulting" a game they enjoyed. I mean, that's all in the wording, of course, but I like to think I can recognize and acknowledge the dumb and bad even while really liking a product.

Or Bioshock 2. The gameplay in that was rock-solid. And while it was certainly not "necessary", insofar as any video game is "necessary", the narrative was pretty neat too. Between Sinclair, Mark Meltzer, and Gus Alexander, I also thought it had far more good characters when compared to Bioshock, even if none of those characters reached the same heights as Andrew Ryan.

Or Diablo III. I would bloody love to have a discussion about Diablo III that never involved a single mention of its online DRM, the previous existence of the Auction House, or how terrible the loot system used to be. Just once. Or even any discussion about Blizzard at all, they all go downhill pretty fast.

Or Metal Gear Solid. I could really go for talking about Metal Gear Solid without having it brought up how long the cutscenes are, or how much pointless exposition Kojima throws in, or how MGS 2 (and then MGS 4 later) totally ruined the franchise.

I could say a million other things as well, I'm sure. But then I'd be here all night, and people would have to scroll for half an hour just to get by my post.

I've got a few conjuring that I've considered posting up.

-The craziest, wackiest, zaniest anime you've ever seen.

-Get them red googles on, it's remembering time. (Best games from your childhood)

-Your favorite past time (I think I might actually post this one)

And I agree with you completely. Lately, it seems these forums have turned down dark roads. I'd like to see the light again.

Weeeeeeelll sheeeeeeet. I'll just show myself out the door then :p

Anyway, I've only ever started one topic, but if I had to give some ideas...

"What's the greatest capcha you've ever gotten?"

"Let the dark work begin: your plans for taking over the world? (No worries, we won't plagiarize)"

"Favorite characters outfit?"

Yep, I think I know why my threads don't get replies >.>

And I'll just avoid commenting on the negatives of the OP; after all, that's what this thread is for, ain't it?

I miss the more personal threads, they were always fun.

First kiss, "how X are you," what kind of traits to you look for in a partner, "the first time you X," that kind of stuff.

I like reading them to gather data because people are generally a bit more pleasant in those threads and some of the stories can be really interesting/entertaining.

Okay, I admit it, I'm just a nosy pervert. >.>

You know what I think we need? A compliments thread. Like, a forum game where you have to give a compliment to the user who posted before you. The problem is that the Forum Games forum is already jolly and cheerful.

No... we need some some kind of feel good thread in Off-topic. I don't know how to do it without a forum game though.

Hey there fellow nosy pervert! I want more of these kind of threads too. Come on people, start spreading the love and personal stories of happiness! We also need more of the "show a picture of yourself" threads.

I also want to see more positive gaming threads. For example, everyone talks about how horrifying World of Warcraft is. Maybe we should have a thread about all the damn good experiences people have had with it and are still having. Warcraft was a really great time for me, I played for about seven years. I don't regret a thing, I had warcraft, a huge social life, doing well in school. It was great.

You know I have been wanting to make a Reg and Poli. discussion on Rights, and the questions behind them like what they are, who they apply to, where they come from, whether or not they can be lost or limited, how does privilege fit into this, how many there are, and so many other questions. I think it would be a good yet deep topic for Reg and Poli without necessarily going down a shouting match because it's a really subjective and theory based so no one should be mocked for feeling stupid. It may also make people think about themselves, which is definitely something I want to see more of. As for Off topic...umm...I could ask for recommendations on dystopian fiction since I adore the concepts and worlds they make. Also maybe ask for comedic theories and see it treated more like drama or art in the sense that there may be more distinct guidelines nd maybe see why certain forms of humor (shock humor, reference humor) work so well despite many comedians feeling it is the lowest grade of humor. Gaming discussion, probably TF2 related, whether wep ideas, polls based on class, or just something else entirely. If I wanted to piss people off, I would make "Why I think Bioshock 2 is leagues better than Infinite" or a similar title and compare the commonalities between the two games and explain why I prefer 2 more.

You know, music threads are always great! ;) Glad to see one opened up today. The timing couldn't have been better - I really needed that.

Adding to the OP, I'd like to propose that everybody take a lesson in how to handle a debate, especially when it brings up hot-topic issues. Let's start with this video, shall we?

Ahem for this topic! This comes from someone involved a lot in the first thread about the Off Topic thread that is the biggest I've ever seen on the Escapist. It was in the basement originally, guess it should have stayed there.

As for things I wish we were talking about more often:

* The actual merits and flaws of system exclusivity would be cool if we kept it civil and avoided the whole PC vs Console and Corporations only want money stuff.

* The various Star Trek series and their contributions and flaws.

* Super Hero Comics as modern day mythology

* If the Firefly MMO can actually capture the spirit of the TV show.

* Anything about Star Control 2, my favorite game from childhood (so much so I had it installed on a computer at school so I could play it there when I was young)

* Heck, today... I'd love to debate with CommanderPonyShep about how My Little Pony has or has not gone downhill and if it's becoming too much like Dragon Ball Z due to what happened in the most recent finale.

* Honestly... after last night and today... I'd take a conversation about how Duke Nuke Em Forever is a modern day classic

Okay that all went a little too exasperated with the events of today, but NinjaDeathSlap has a point, the forums have been extremely hostile lately with alot of yelling and bickering rather than discussion. Yes in the Gender Threads and the SJ threads, but even in the game discussion and "geeky stuff" discussion.

And the oddest thing is with the exception of a few gender threads and the Israel threads and one or two posters the basement is rather calm and discussy...It's weird to me that that's happening

My thoughts exactly.
The bile and general unpleasantness of so much of the gaming community has gotten so bad and I've gotten so sick of it that I've considered flat out ducking out of the whole thing. I'd still play games, and I'd still follow games news to a certain extent, but I'd leave all the communities and I'd stop making it such a large part of my life so I can finally focus on something that doesn't make me even more depressed then I already am.

I've got some great ideas for threads that I've just never had the time/energy/initiative to actually create myself...

"When do most of you eat lunch?"

"Which is the best state for someone who hates the sun?"

"Which do you prefer, modern anime or 80's/90's anime?"

"Poll: Duke 3D or DOOM?"

Etc.

Not really an Anime, but I have to bring up Pixel Maritan, a manga/audio language tool to help you learn to speak English like your in the US Marines.

In truth though it seems mainly an excuse to have cutesy anime girls quote R Lee Ermey from Full Metal Jacket in broken english.
