Hi all im just here to tell u an interesting fact.It has been proven that the average person will only remember 20 percent what they were taught at school counting high school. These percentages changes depending on if u listen to the teacher. People who are the class clown might remember only 10%while smart people can manage to remember 30%.So my questions to u are-do u thinks this is a problem, how can we fix this,do u think this info is wrong and how much do u remember from your school years/previous years

Thanks for reading
p.s.I know my grammers bad im fixing it

You don't remember it because you don't use it. At least that's what I think. Also as you learn more advanced things the older things get forgotten.

Source of this fact?

Anyway, that sounds about right, when you consider just how much you are taught over those 12 years. So no, I don't think it's a problem. I think it's normal.

Hmmmmm More stats with no sources to back them up. I think I might need some more facts before I form an hypothesis on such an opinion.

To fix a problem first it has to be an actual problem. Most of what is taught in school is useless drivel. There are a few jobs that require an in depth knowledge of mathematics or chemistry and it is always important to be able to speak and write intelligently but beyond that the only current purpose for school is to set up a mental obstacle course to cull the smart from the dumb to decide who goes to what colleges.

I just got through with High School so maybe I'm just angry and cynical about all the time I wasted there.

That's because 80% of what is taught in school is designed as factual preparation for that important 20%. In fact, you probably only learn 20% of what you are 'taught' (I'm guessing that means 'told' in terms of these 'studies', do we have a source for this?). The learning process is not a download, a good deal of what teachers tell us are lies designed entirely to help us comprehend the truth, because that's how we learn.

We only remember 20% of the facts tossed about in school, this is mostly because we are only supposed to.

Its not a problem. The public school system that im assuming most all of us are victims of are sort of like the first 10 levels of WoW before you Spec. Its like they cover EVERYTHING so you can get a feel for what you really like and what you wish you could forget sooner. Then once you hit lvl 10 (IE get to college) you start doing what you remember, and know, and care to understand.

Apologies for the terrible analogy its all i could think of on the spot.

School isn't really designed to teach you anything as much as it is designed to prepare you for working life.

Hence why the first thing they teach you is to be on time, be quiet and follow the rules.

Woowoo brainwashing!

Are we talking about active or passive memory here?

The difference is pretty much as follows.
If you're being asked "What's the capital of Brazil?", you are using your active memory to search for the answer. It either comes to you or it doesn't. Or then you just go through a list of random cities in your head and see if any of those would seem fitting.

Which is pretty much what passive memory is about. Taking a given piece of information and trying to see, if it fits what you already know.
For example, if you couldn't answer the question I presented earlier, try this one.
Is Lima the capital of Brazil?
Or
Is Brasília the capital of Brazil?
It's very likely that you can answer these questions a lot easier than the first one.

And even of that 20% how much of it is actually useful in the real world? Unless you plan on going into something major like engineering which requires you to get full marks in physics, chem etc, then alot of it you will never use again, so why bother remembering it.

The point of high school is so you can learn how to learn, essentially. High school prepares your brain for higher learning so that you can effectively process and take in the information you need to be a productive citizen of society.

There you have it folks, high school has a point! Of course there are severe problems with the education system here in North America.

it's a decent average to consider, however I say average, there are always the odd cases where one will retain much much more, and most of what we learn is eventually broken down and built up into more of a " collective mess" of things that can come and go as needed " or not, but then pop back to the surface weeks after you needed it... I HATE that )

so there are also other forms of memory to contend with, from active to passive memory, subconscious memory, sensory memory, associated memory.....all we see or do can fall into one or more categories as well.

Most of what we are taught at school is only valuable in terms of preparing us for learning more useful things later on. Teachers are also teaching us how to learn and process new information. People who go on to university may not need to use what they learned in high school (a large part of university is being told that everything you thought you knew was wrong and then being told why) but without it they would really struggle to understand more complicated ideas.

80% of what you learn at school is useless anyway, so it all evens out.
In countries where you have to study everything (for instance, if I'm going to be a PC technician, I still have to study Math, Geography and so on), I'd say that it's closer to 95%.
