RPG: I go with who ever has the coolest sword.
Medival: Dagger and a crossbow just cause those are probably the only things I'd know how to use.
Modern: AN-94 sounds good to me with a Colt .45 as a sidearm.

RPG: Normally the spell caster with a sword and hood.
Mideival: A crowbar, seriously. If not, a flail.
Modern: M16 assault rifle with underbarrel grenade launcher. Or FN Scar assault rifle with ACOG scope. Side arm being a desert eagle.

In games, I play them over and over so I try different styles.

In real life (and I do carry), I like my 1911 auto, with my knife back-up. If I was going on a mission I would take an AR-15 with me.

I forgot medieval, a Katana with Japaneses longbow and full martial arts training.

RPG: Some analogue of a monk class.
Medieval: Bladed quarterstaff and a cartridge-fed crossbow [they existed]
Modern: Steyr something. Only assault-rifle I'm reasonably acquainted with.

In the moderny real worldy times, I would want nothing but a AK-47 based rifle, because they are incredibly simple, robust, reliable, durable, dependable, and so much more. Also, outside of America, ammunition is fairly plentiful.
7.62x39 ammunition is stupid easy to find even in the US.

---

OT:

In RPGS: I like something stealthy, but with some good, solid melee skills. Perhaps a touch of magic. In D&D terms, certainly a Ranger.

For melee, give me a nice, heavy quarterstaff. Reach, stability, and a plethora of uses. Of course, a longbow for ensuring I don't need to use said staff.

I'll take an AR-15 for basic combat. Ammunition is so prevalent it's ludicrous. Also, so modular in design there's so many options for perfecting its capabilities. Perhaps a nice, reliable .45 ACP for a sidearm.

7.62x39 is incredibly hard to find where I live because of a current shortage, and the price has tripled when you can find it recently.

I agree whole heartedly about the .45 ACP, and that .223/.556 ammo is very easy to find, but wouldn't you be worried about breakdown or malfunction with the AR? That's my one big worry with it, yes it's become a respectable weapon, but I have to question it's long term durability.

In High School, I was on the JROTC Saber Team. I learned how to handle a real blade very well, and it is definitely the way I'd go if presented with the necessity.

In RPGs, I like to go with the one-handed blade + shield option.

RPG: Assasin or similar
Medivel weapons: broadsword, Throwing knives
Modern: C-75 (look it up), well balanced combat knife.

Yes i like easily concelled weapons and a knife can be used for hundreds of things that even a sword isn't pratical for. Like as a field scaple for example or triming wires...whatever.

RPG: Spellblade. I tend to blend close combat with heavy hitting magic and a small amount of protective magic.
Medieval: Cloak and dagger for a few reasons.

1) It's unassuming. Most daggers are typically used as eating utensils rather than actual weapons and cloaks can and will be used for mobile bedrolls.

2) While the dagger forces you to come in close, some materials for cloaks, silk for example, are exceedingly difficult to cut with a weapon swing, thus making them quite useful for hiding your movements while you get in close. The lack of range for the dagger ensures that it never actually gets caught in the cloth as you strike. Also, the cloak can be used to bind, blind, and hold an opponent and the dagger can easily double as a thrown weapon should you have a spare.

Modern: Some form of high caliber rifle with a proper scope or, preferably, proxy via overloaded electronics, gas attacks, or explosives.
