I'm sure everyone has had one of these at least once. I personally have trouble taking abilities that I find are too situational to be useful. In the Zone from Xcom EU/EW is one example. See, if you take it, you are counting on the enemy not being in cover when you open fire in order to capitalize on the benefits. However, they are likely going to run to cover by the time you see them, thereby negating the usefulness on the ability. So what about you guys?

I recently downloaded dark souls at a bargin price on Xbox 360 and if you haven't played the game, well you are basically undead....or something. I'm not sure myself exactly but I'm enjoying the game anyways.
So, when you start/get killed you become undead and look zombified. However you can collect 'humanity' which makes you look human instead of undead. I am probably missing something but apart from changing your appearance it doesn't seem to do much so I don't bother with it.

Another one would be the elder scrolls games. I've never really gotten into the spells and magic, it's just far more satisfying hitting whatever it is you want to die with a big two handed weapon.

For me it's usually the "super weapons" in shooters. Stuff like the BFG from Doom.

Usually their ammunition is pretty limited, so I always find myself in the mindset that I'll save them for when the situation is dire. The problem though is that I always end up in the mindset that things could possibly get worse later on, so I just keep saving the ammo for those hypothetical worse situations. Before I know it I've defeated the end boss with a full stockpile of ammo for a heavy weapon I never once fired.

Even in games like Call of Duty I find myself trying to conserve grenades and rockets, which makes even less sense since I'll probably die and respawn with refilled grenades and rockets momentarily.

Shotlock from Kingdom Hearts Birth By Sleep, got a tutorial for it an all, but I never found use for it (until the end where a guide reminded me that it still existed) Its useful, I still never used it much once I remembered it.
Unfortunately it's also the easiest way to beat the Mirage Arena-specific boss.

I liked the idea behind it and all, but staying still long enough to get a full lock on enemies was almost always a bad idea.

OT: Crossbows. In most games, really, but what comes to mind particularly is that and the spear-thrower in the first two Bioshock games. They do a lot of damage, but you get them so late in the game, by that point you're already overloaded with other things to kill enemies.

I would say vibroblades in the Knights of the Old Republic games, but there's a lot of qualifying to that. But for the main character, at least, I'd never use anything except the lightsaber after you obtain it.

Team Fortress 2 has plenty of weapons I don't use, mostly because they don't fit my particular playstyle. For example, I never equip the Mantreads or Market Gardener as Soldier, as I lack the proper coordination to attack enemies when I'm rocket jumping.

You and me both. It's a habit I just can't shake, even when I know the end is right around the corner. Take Return to Castle Wolfenstein for instance. The only reason why I started using my more exotic weapons like the Panzerfaust and tesla gun on Heinrich is because I ran out of bullets for my conventional guns. I was still a walking arsenal for all intents and purposes when the smoke cleared.

Biggoron Sword in OoT. Took a year worth of footwork to earn a sword too big to swing in half the areas you need it, and too slow to hit half the things you want to hit with it, and only usable in the adult half of the game.

Allot of the time when I encounter this problem its because I just grabbed the ability just to have it. So in fable I would usually grab all of the spells just so I can have a max level character. Also the get over hear ability that you can get in kingdoms of amalur. I also fall into the trap of collecting tons of ammo for a weapon that has allot of power to it take the mini nuke launcher from fallout I have tons of ammo for it and I would sometimes use the ammo for bargaining chips.

I played dishonoured recently so most of the combat skills and weapons .I was either being stealthy or had fucked up being stealthily so was running. I also didn't get the skill that disintegrates bodies when you kill someone because finding places to hide the bodies was fun.
I had the same issue with Dues Ex: HR, you have all these fun abilities and weapons but I see the game as more of a stealth game so never use them.

In general I tend not take skills that have less than a %10 chance of working even if what it dose is very powerful. With the ones that are 10% I usually only take them if you roll to proc them a lot like if it procs on hit and you're playing a fast attacking character. Otherwise it's too unreliable. I would rather have weaker abilities that I can rely on working than powerful ones that often don't.

Limited use and rare stuff kills me because I hoard them thinking I shouldn't use them until I really need them even if there long past the point of being useful or I have a ton of them.

Being human enables co-op (both with npc's and other players),PvP and allow you to kindle bonfires so they give more flasks. It dose a couple of minor things outside of that but those are the only important things it dose. If you want solo the whole thing and don't PVP just stay undead untill you want to kindle a bonfire.

I've got a few hundred hours in Dark Souls but I've never used the Claymore or Zweihander (two very popular weapons). There's no reason really, I just never had the interest.

Heavy weapons in the Fallout games. Again, just not interested.

In Kingdom Hearts 2 I never bothered with the drive forms. Just mashing X worked for most of the game.

The bomb in Shootem ups . The bomb that clears the screen but you never use because you might need to use it when your about to die but you get a gameover with three bombs left over. Geometry wars would be a good example

Sell the TF2 weapons on the Market Place. Even though there probably only work like .07 if you sell enough you can get enough for a small indie game for 3 bucks

Any restorative or damage item that ever existed in most RPG games.

What's that? I have 99 Full Elixirs and I'm in the final dungeon?

... better save them, just in case...

I would, except for the fact that their stats might be altered in a future update that might make them useful for me. I used to hate the Concheror until a recent patch added a +2 hp/second regen to it. The buff comes in handy playing on random servers, where the prospect of having a decent Medic on your team (or any Medic at all) is a crapshoot. Besides, I like crafting extras into metal, which I can use to create hats. Yes, I know that it's more "cost effective" to trade for hats, but I like the crafting process, even if I get something I don't like. It's kind of like playing a slot machine, only you're not losing any real money when you do it.

In Deus Ex: Human Revolution there is an upgrade that fires explosive balls from his arms, never purchased this upgrade and let all the ammo I found collect dust.

It's a shame you avoided the drive forms in KH2. At least they changed up the combat a bit, giving you 4 drive forms (and a 5th if you use the first 3 too often) to swap into and knock around the enemy was nice. Plus these forms were the only way to get high jump, glide and aerial recovery abilities and level them up. And a few extra combo pluses.

Gonna throw my vote in with the heavy weapons in fallout new vegas too, because shooting people from a distance (with my insane BB Gun no less) felt far more satisfying than beating someones face in with a sledgehammer.

Also never bothered with the magic in Dark Souls. I actually wasted hundreds of thousands of souls on my main file so I could buy all of Logan's magic, with the full intention of not using it, because I just wanted to trigger his scenes and get his hat. Which I also didn't use.

I never touched the flamethrower or the assault rifle in The Last of Us. I never found them that necessary to use, and because I conserve ammo like crazy usually just stuck with the pistol, revolver, shotgun, and bow because they had the most common ammo drops in the game. Every time I found flamethrower ammo I thought "better save it for later," horded it, and never used it.

The flamethrower is a pretty game breaking weapon at that. At least when it comes to infected. It stunlocks everything, even Bloaters. It turns every infected encounter from then on into pest control. I never pick it up anymore either.

I don't touch Listen Mode as well. I like the sensation of not knowing exactly where everyone and everything is.

In Resident Evil 4 I never use the Red9 despite many fans swearing by it. There's just something about the way it aims and fires that I just can't get used to. I also never bother with the TMP and Minethrower. The TMP takes up too much space, and the Minethrower is just plain shit.

Yeah, I found that out once I got to the end of the game and was wondering why the game apparently didn't have glide.
