Other than the railgun, is there any other weapon you can think was made up, but still has a prominant influence in gaming? While we are at it, can you think of any you'd like to see brought to reality, for example, the portal gun and furthermore, can you think of any ideas that would make for a unique weapon never before seen in a game?

I personally thought there were some interesting weapons I'd like to see more of in other games in both Halo and Resistance.

EDIT: I've noticed the gunblade concept coming back and forth since FF8 throughout the FF series. I think Square has a love hate relationship with the idea of it.

Light Saber. That is all.

I mean, just look at the ripoffs: Beam Katana, Energy Sword, Laser Blade. That's all just code for Light Saber. Hell, I would even argue the spirit reaver in the Legacy of Kain seems Light Saberish.

EDIT: Seeing OPs edit, feel the need to point out Gunblades aren't entirely fictional. Huntings Swords would occasionally have pistol barrels attached to them. You can still see them in the military museum in Paris. They're pretty awesome.

this isnt really an invented weapon, but the concept of pistols being weak and worthless as weapons is a consistence in gaming

the BFG 9000, pretty much the standard template for that penultimate powerful yet impractical weapon that can vaporize half of everything on the screen

lightning guns are also something that shows up from time to time, depending on the setting

The railgun isn't made up so much as it is still mostly theoretical. As soon as there were powerful electromagnets, I'm pretty sure someone was thinking of the possibility of using them to accelerate a metal object to kill people.

Heck, the US Navy is testing the concept for use in naval artillery, it's just not practical because it takes stupid amounts of power.

Tripmines with laser beams. Earliest I can remember was in DN3d and latest on DS2.

The multi-shot rocket launcher. Doom was the first game to popularize it, IIRC. Its been such a definitive staple of most FPS games, but the concept is actually fairly rare in real life. Most handheld rockets/RPGs are single-shot only.

But for more fictional weaponry, the hand-held chain gun. Yes, they do TECHNICALLY exist, but are extremely impractical. This doesn't stop them from being in a huge number of FPS games.

If they were used that way in the Final Fantasy series, I wouldn't have a problem with it, but they way gunblades "function" in FF is while swinging the blade the gun is fired in order to increase the swing speed. This is a completely retarded concept and whoever made it up needs to take remedial physics.

Railguns aren't really made up. They do exist, both in theory and (actually) in practice, though they aren't really viable enough yet to be plausible, except maybe in large naval vessels.

OT, I'd say a mash up between blaster rifle-type things and sentry guns. Well, sentry guns before last year (apparently they now exist!) And blaster rifle things just because they're totally implausible (why shoot in bursts rather than a straight laser sight, how much energy would it take to create a laser that penetrates better than a bullet, how much energy as stopping power would it actually be able to transfer to the target, etc. I feel like, apart from large spacecraft and perhaps planes and anti-missle systems, lasers will have no viable use in warfare.

Epic space lasers, such as the Hammer of Dawn from GOW. They've tried and failed to make them so maybe we'll have them one day. And we all shall be destroyed. Also the Aperture Science Matter Transferring Portal Launcher.

BFG.

Edit: *Eurgh* 'low content post' nonsense.

I say the BFG from Doom because it introduced the concept of unnecessarily large and over-powered guns.

I've always like the concept of weaponized Tesla coils, ever since I first saw them in the Red Alert games.

They probably wouldn't be practical in real life, though.

The gravity gun from Half Life. You see it used more than you think in games.
Ow you stole my one =P

But if we're going to be correct about this - Timesplitters was the first game to do the gravity weapon afaik.

Actually, gunblades (in their original incarnation in FF VIII) are vibroswords. Pulling the trigger causes a bullet to explode in the chamber, causing the blade to vibrate momentarily, allowing for increased cutting power.

Anyway,my addition is the EMP.

Not a perfect consistence.

"The M6D uses 12.7x40mm M225 SAPHE (Semi Armor Piercing High Explosive) magnum loads. These rounds have a jacket of copper or cupro-nickel around the projectile while the projectile itself is hollow and filled with an explosive compound and a delayed-detonation impact fuse. When the round impacts a target, the jacket will initially help the projectile maintain its shape, allowing it to travel into the target before detonating almost immediately after impact, causing massive tissue damage and system shock."

I miss that gun...
