To me, a gunblade should be a weapon that is balanced and designed to function well as a gun AND a blade. I didn't like FF8 for its weapon ideas, though that's nitpicky to me by comparison of the whole game.

OT: I feel that the plasma rifle is a staple in influential weaponry. It's a very straightforward device.

The Fatman or mini nuke is awsome,

not sure how much of in impact its had on games

anyway funny story, I was playing fallout New Vegas and I had so much gear that I was constantly switiching it around with my companions I also hat a fatman and some mini nukes, anyway I was walking along and saw some feinds, an easy target I whipped out my gun and ran after them before I took a shot the was a HUGE nuclear explosion out of nowhere and it scared the crap out of me, the two feinds were completley nuked, I turned around and saw veronica holding the fatman I had given her, with that smug smile on her face, I didnt know she would actually use the damn thing...I took it away from her straight away

After the Spreader in the contra series, every shoot-em-up game is required to have a gun that is similar.

Gauss rifles. Similar to railguns in that they fire projectiles at far larger speeds than regular gun.

Gauss rifles fire projectiles at our close to the speed of light, iirc, there are multiple methods to attain such speeds, but magnets seem to be common.

No, gauss guns are coilguns...they are like railguns, except they use magnetic coils instead of magnetic rails. Also, railguns put a current through the projectile.

The muzzle velocity is irrelevant to it being a gauss gun or not, but you aren't going to get a velocity anywhere near c, and if you did, the recoil would be horrific.

Light-saber is indisputable.
Gravity gun has a log going for it, but come on. It is completely awesome, but you can't pull a random person off the street and expect them to know what a gravity gun is. But you can with a light saber.

The gravity gun is the Ur-Shoehorned-in-gimmick-weapon.

Not a perfect consistence.

"The M6D uses 12.7x40mm M225 SAPHE (Semi Armor Piercing High Explosive) magnum loads. These rounds have a jacket of copper or cupro-nickel around the projectile while the projectile itself is hollow and filled with an explosive compound and a delayed-detonation impact fuse. When the round impacts a target, the jacket will initially help the projectile maintain its shape, allowing it to travel into the target before detonating almost immediately after impact, causing massive tissue damage and system shock."

I miss that gun...
And that is from where?

Oh, and thought of one. The man portable Minigun. Not so much the minigun, as the man-portable part. As save for movies, I think if one was to actually fire a carry-able minigun, they would kill themselves and everyone around them in a extremely gory fashion. But there are several games I can think of off the top of my head that have it in it, and I feel Doom was the first to have a minigun as a weapon.

although arguably based on the Kusarigama:

the "blades of athena" from god of war seem to have featured in a fair few games now

Wolfenstein 3d had the chaingun which was a gatling type weapon. Mecha-Hitler's weapon of choice.

I'll say EMP grenades, they are everywhere and have been for a while.

That pistol is the pistol from Halo CE and to a lesser extent in Reach

My choice is for any weapon that uses plasma, do they know the material or energy used to contain the plasma would be worth more if it didn't have to hold a highly energetic fourth form of matter.

Physics is a ***** when you try messing around at the speed of light.
Anyway, I think the Overwatch (the combine pulse rifle) from HL2 was pretty game changing, because it introduced the concept of high-speed, one-shot kill, ricocheting projectiles, whereas most games to that point were simply content with two of the three.

Epic space lasers, such as the Hammer of Dawn from GOW. They've tried and failed to make them so maybe we'll have them one day. And we all shall be destroyed. Also the Aperture Science Matter Transferring Portal Launcher.

I don't know. I had a hard time choosing to drop my pistol for a different weapon in the first Halo. Short of no ammo, that rarely left my side. But it probably depends on the caliber pistol too. The magnum in Goldeneye could be a one-hit kill pistol.

Light Saber. That is all.

I mean, just look at the ripoffs: Beam Katana, Energy Sword, Laser Blade. That's all just code for Light Saber. Hell, I would even argue the spirit reaver in the Legacy of Kain seems Light Saberish.

EDIT: Seeing OPs edit, feel the need to point out Gunblades aren't entirely fictional. Huntings Swords would occasionally have pistol barrels attached to them. You can still see them in the military museum in Paris. They're pretty awesome.
Actually, gunblades (in their original incarnation in FF VIII) are vibroswords. Pulling the trigger causes a bullet to explode in the chamber, causing the blade to vibrate momentarily, allowing for increased cutting power.

Anyway,my addition is the EMP.
I'll take your word on vibroswords. I just looked it up and it's apparently a Star Wars thing. I have no knowledge of SW outside of the movies, so this is the first time I've even read the term.

The US army had a man-portable minigun in the trials for the next-gen squad automatic to replace the M60. It was called the M164 and it was too ammo-hungry to perform well. To date there are only half a dozen or so of the M164 "six-pack" in civillian hands, at least two of those are in the hands of hollywood special effects houses. You might recognize the General Electric M164 "Six-pack" from the movie Predator where it was used as they intended it to be, as a man-portable minigun.

Though the real-life 5.56mm minigun would have been fired from a tripod on the ground, when firing blanks it has sufficiently low recoil to be fired while standing and has shown up in such movies as Terminator 2 and Predator. the lower recoil of the blank rounds makes it possible for an actor to fire it from the hip without breaking said hip.

Samus' Grapple Beam has been re-invented for Bulletstorm, so whilst not an obvious choice I'd say that the concept has survived well. If you want to simplify the idea, the Hookshot probably counts for that too (which would make it the original).

You also see a lot of orbital lasers and things like that, like the Hammer of Dawn in Gears or the Ion Cannon in Command and Conquer.

I personally thought there were some interesting weapons I'd like to see more of in other games in both Halo and Resistance.
The Bullseye is my all time fav video game gun. Also, I think gunblades are made with awesomesmithy. Gunblades and R1 timing won me over in FF8 and I never really looked back at 7 with the exception of "materia was a cool idea".
