I always take my shoes off indoors. Was the same with all my friend's houses as well. Guess it just depends where you live, though I live in the US and apparently it's pretty uncommon to take your shoes off indoors. For me shoes are for when you're going out and doing stuff. Not going out and doing stuff? Then just take 'em off and relax.

Regarding other people's houses, always struck me as just being polite to take your shoes off. Provided the house isn't insanely dirty or under repair or something, in which case I'll do what the host does, which is usually leave them on.

That's just sort of odd. I mean, come on, shoes for outdoors, slippers/socks/bare feet for indoors. That's the way it's always been in the houses I've lived in, always made sense to me. Also I always thought it was more polite to remove your shoes indoors. No sense treading dirt into the house, onto the carpets, no wait what are you doing clean that up right now!
Also what he said.

I live in the US and I get annoyed if people don't take their shoes off at the door. Of course, if the person who owns the house is a slob, I might not want to take my shoes off either. It all depends on the state of the house.

I take my shoes off wherever I stop after I come from being outside. During summer, I usually take my socks off as well.

Considering that my computer screen is my 32 inch HDTV, it sits next to my bed, and I lay in bed when I am on my computer, it would be really weird if I kept my shoes on while indoors and laying in bed.

I only take my shoes off inside if I know I'm going to be there for awhile. Also, sometimes it's best just to leave them on if you've been working hard that day and need to contain your stinky feet within your shoes!
As a Canadian I can, in fact, confirm that this is true.

Being of Korean culture, I'm used to taking my shoes off indoors. It came as a surprise when I went over to a mate's house and I could wear my shoes inside but I just shrugged it off. People are different, accept that. It's not an 'American' thing either, the friend I mentioned comes from England.

There are people who wear shoes indoors? SAVAGES!!!

Forget the matter of courtesy. It is a matter of hygiene IMO.

My feet are exceptionally...rank. I tend to ASK if I should keep my shoes on or off in anothers house so on their own head be it, but for inside my own I have an 'indoor pair' of shoes. Excessive sweaty feet ftw...

I have a pair of boots that are more like slippers if you wear them, but they still LOOK like shoes. I like them, I change them out for trainers mostly though if I'm leaving the house.

I wear shoes indoors because I am lazy. I am currently wearing shoes because I had to go outside for afew minutes and just walked streight back in to continue my internet escapades.

If I have been on my feet all day then it would be a different story. on such days my feet hurt and shoes are malicious entities whose sole priority in such situations is to cause throbbing.

Im not from the US but I will gladly blame them for poisoning my mind with their influential media.

In the UK it is generally seen as rude to leave shoes on unless you know the person well enough and they are okay with it. In the vast majority of cases though, shoes are taken off.
No, it really isn't. What you mean is 'the people I know generally see it as rude to leave shoes on unless you know the person well enough and they are okay with it. In the vast majority of cases of people I know, shoes are taken off.'

I always found people who insisted on you taking shoes off to be really fucking weird. Thankfully I rarely encounter it

I live in England and my shoes are the first piece of clothing I put on. Granted this makes it very hard to put on my trousers (pants). The only people I know who don't allow shoes to be worn in their house do so because they are worried about their carpets.

I guess due to the invention of pavements (sidewalks), the need to avoiding the embarrassment of ruining someones carpet or making a mess with muddy shoes has diminished.

As far as germs go... don't lick your carpet.

I'm pretty sure it's commonplace in most Western nations. We're not Japanese, and we don't have a ritualistic point of view on wearing shoes indoors.
not in Australia it's not

OP: I think it's really wierd to wear shoes insidetheir own or others homes
I am Japanese and grew up in Australia.
In japan obviously shoes in the house is simply crazy.
Some OCD people tell you to take off your shoes in thier car. (Seriouslly, though I have never met one yet)

In Australia I hardly ever wpre shoes indoors or outdoors.LOL

Right now, living in Japan, even my dog washes his feet everytime he comes home from a walk.

I know, i don't wear shoes at home unless i'm in the backyard... too many bindis, the only time i've asked someone to take their shoes off in my car is if they are really muddy because I don't want to have to clean my upholstery repeatedly

He is basing his assumption off American MEDIA.

MEDIA is work for people, thus they are wearing shoes on the set, which is their WORK.

Make sense now?
No.

When you see a TV show set in someone's home, you might expect them to not be wearing shoes, just as you might expect them to not be wearing a coat, or be carrying an umbrella.

I take them off in my own home or in homes I'm comfortable in. If it's just a brief stay or I expect to go outside again, I'll keep them on. Or sometimes I'll just leave them on because I don't feel like taking them off.
It's all good.

I do wipe the soles of my shoes on whatever mat they may have.
