Weird reasons you hold onto games

Every now and again I find myself hanging onto a game for some strange novelty.

For instance, Brutal Legend. I hate this game, it's awful. But I can play as Tim Curry in the multiplayer mode, instantly rendering all my criticisms invalid. I don't care how unfun it is to actually play, I'm playing as Tim Curry doing his devil shtick with a horde of S&M flavored demons, and that makes keeping the game worth it for me.

Another one's Sonic Generations. This game is fine, in general I really like it, but I get to PULVERIZE Silver The Hedgehog. Not only that, I get to show that poser who's boss to "Sonic Boom" from Sonic CD thanks to the music options. In fact, I can do this to ALL the posers. This guarantees that it will never leave my collection, ever, and more than justifies the price of entry for me.

How about you, Escapists? What strange novelties keep games firmly cemented in your collection?

In todays industry this is probably going to come off as bizarre but I like knowing I have some games that I actually own, games I can install without internet access, games that'll work without 6 years of waiting for patches to break the game in new ways and so on. Oh, and I liked how the games on my shelf are actually worth playing.

Brutal Legend because of the music, Tim Curry, and Jack Black, oh and Rob Halford being hilarious.

Black Ops, I don't like CoD, but I will never let this game go because of Zork. If anyone on my friends list sees me ever playing that game it's because I'm playing that and going through the list of things I can do to that game to get funny responses.

I still have Spider-Man on PC. Not the movie game; this one also came out on N64 and PS1 (though the PC version is much, much better.)

As good as it is, I've done everything this game has to do a thousand times over, but I hang onto it because 1. I love Spider-Man and I've yet to find another good game starring him, and 2. I got this for my 11th birthday, and I remember so clearly that our old Windows 95 couldn't run it so we could only play it at my grandparents' house on their better computer. We'd make special weekend trips over there, and there'd be pizza and we'd play this.

For some time we didn't know how to access saved data, either, so each time we went over we'd have to start the game anew. It became an event; to see if we could finish this game in the time we had.

Anyway, yeah, it holds a lot of sentimental value for me and that's why I hang onto it. I let my little brother play it now; a true passing of the torch.

That's just so cute.In a funny, cuddly kinda way. Now,you can flag me for disturbing, but imagining a bunch of kids desperately trying to beat Spiderman in one weekend is just the funniest thing I've thought of the whole day.

That is damn, damn touching.

I've actually got a somewhat similar story with the Lucasarts point-and-click games. My mom, sister, and I would play them every summer and solve the puzzles together. I still remember my sister grabbing the notepad excitedly whenever we learned a new song in Loom.

Only game that ever beat us was the one time we ventured into Sierra's library, and that was The Dagger of Amun Ra. We kept getting killed by bats or something.

Installed or just kept around?

I still have all my old C64 games in a box somewhere. Also a C64.

I also have a C64 emulator and a disk image of Bruce Lee. I used to play that game way back when, every Christmas, with my dad.

It's almost time to fire it up again...

I also have Diablo. No, not that crappy thing they called a sequel, Diablo. Still installed. Just in case I get the urge for some naked maging.

Guitar hero 2,3 and Aerosmith..... Gamestop wont let me trade them in..

But seriously, Both the Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic.
The reason being, besides the fact they are just Awesome games is, the last thing one of my best friends said to me before he died(it was this past summer, he was only 18) was "Oh, Atton Rand," referring to one of the Characters in KOTOR II. He also loved those games.

Eh, I could, but to me it's just an added bonus for me to keep the game.

I do occasionally play the flash based ones though.

I have the game "Shadow Hearts" that I had gotten from my best friend for a birthday present. I had a rather small crush on him, but never acted on it. We grew apart, and then I moved away. I still keep it, and I take really good care of it even despite not playing it for a couple of years. I beat the game a few times, but I adore it's story and love the game. I keep it mostly because I still treasure my friendship with him. So I guess it has more sentimental value than anything else.

I also have Silent Hill 2 for the PS2... :3 I'm keeping that for as long as I live since I simply adore the story for it and still view it as the pinnacle of gaming.

I still have Threads of Fate, despite long ago selling any consoles I could play the game on.
I guess I still keep it around because that was my all-time favorite PS1 game.
Thinking about this makes me want to go buy a PS2 just so I can go play it again.

Need for Speed: Most Wanted because, despite the rubber-band AI making it impossible to win Speedtrap races after a certain point, this game has the best police pursuits of the entire series. Bar none.

Man, I wish I would've gotten into the Lucasarts pn'c adventures back when I was young. They're praised so highly these days. Aren't there iPhone versions now? I know you can get the original Tales Of Monkey Island that way.

You can do one better by hopping on Steam. The Secret of Monkey Island and [/i]Monkey Island 2: Lechuck's Revenge[/i] are both available in special edition form. You can get them in a bundle for $14. They let you swap between new graphics and the oldschool ones. You can also get Loom and The Dig via Steam.

I'd steer clear of Tales of Monkey Island, though, Telltale's shot at the series... ehhhhhhhh... not so great.
