Well, if you go without food for an extended amount of time (or a strenuous activity like swimming the English channel) you start to digest your own fat cells. Once those have run out your body starts to digest it's muscle cells. After than it moves to all the internal organs like the heart. I would call that self-cannibalization. You probably meant that they will bight the side of their body and swallow it which is very odd and sounds like a rather inefficient system since I would assume you need to heal that chunk of your body that is missing.

Fun Fact: eating less than what you should can actually make you live longer. If you do this then your body will be incredibly efficient about it's energy output. Plus, this mean less oxidants in your body messing up your DNA which means a lessened chance for cancer.
