Anyway, I guess if the price of games goes down this can't be all that bad. The distribution costs will be far less, so as long as the game companies are willing to pass on the savings to their consumers, they should drop in price.
That'll be the day.

Aw hell, you've got a conference to go to, lots of games now want a word with you.

I see Three possible outcomes from this.

1. All the bile everyone has been spewing about big name publishers like EA and Activision will stop being imaginary bullshit and we'll see the beginning of the dark empire.

2. With used games and piracy nullified, we'll see games go down in price and possibly become more accessible to newcomers (provided internet connection becomes a general thing like electricity is)

3. Most hardcore console gamers will migrate to the PC where cracking digital games is easily done and PC Gaming will simply be the more convienient choice at that point.

Being a PC Gamer, I have the luxury of getting to sit on the sidelines of console gaming and observe how it evolves without much of it affecting me too badly to be a problem. So I'm waiting with curiosity.
Haven't you heard? PC gaming is going to be dead soon...

Yeah I knew that, I was just messing with you, giving what used to be the standard response by console people when talking about the future of PC gaming

like I said, how can people be so "meh" about it?
Because I don't feel like getting worked up over rumors.
I agree...it would be alot less headache indusing if people on the internet didnt lose their shit over insignifiact things

however Im not talking about the rumour..Im talking about the IDEA...the step from games as products to a service is a big deal..and warrents peoples thourght

Isn't all of this just speculation? : \

Anyway, I guess if the price of games goes down this can't be all that bad. The distribution costs will be far less, so as long as the game companies are willing to pass on the savings to their consumers, they should drop in price.

The major downfall to this is download times and bandwidth usage.... I like being able to get a game and not having to wait several hours before being able to use it : \ Plus the inevitable service crashes will bring about some pretty nasty sales blackouts to just about every developer out there.
is it worth handing your balls over to the publishers? jsut for cheaper games?

the bandwith issue is no small thing..for some its a fucking deal breaker (my download speed is criminal)

sorry..its thats an issue that really hits home for me

I'm getting a WiiU. Funny how most of the article doesn't apply to me.

LOL I'm not buying any console that doesn't allow you to buy hard copies of a game for it. I'm pretty sure most of the gaming community feels the same way as well. So, by doing this, the companies would be MASSIVELY shooting themselves in the foot. Actually, screw the foot. Like, right in the chest.

In fact, I'm kind of looking forward to this if they do this. It means for me:

1. A return to the classics. Games that should have got more attention in the past will now have a great chance to get some. Basically, overlooked classics will no longer be so as everyone is now looking for something new to play.

2. More PC gaming. Now, I've got nothing against consoles but I really think the PC needs more attention as well. Games developed on it are just superior most of the time to their console counterparts.

Rumors are now considered fact, more at 11.

Seriously? All we've heard so far are rumors and people ripping on the console companies based on those rumors. Wait for the damn thing to near release, and then criticize it. These threads are such trollbait; I bet you if I spread a rumor that the new Xbox will come with a built-in toaster, we'd all believe that too and start ripping on Microsoft for it.

Perhaps, but it's best IMO all the same to get the word out to companies that we won't stand for this sort of nonsense.

Thank you for the RATIONALE.

People love to jump on the first thing they hear and hold on for dear life, explaining away any facts that emerge and buying into the media machine's hype.

Having a different opinion does not automatically negate your own beliefs. Alas, people will forever take opposing ideas as personal attacks. Consensus is a myth...

The more rumors I hear about what these guys are doing, the more I'm inclined to agree with the above. I just may be going Nintendo only this next generation, except knowing publishers they'll refuse to make games for the damn thing on the grounds that it is Nintendo and that they aren't "protecting the publishers from used games," but you know what, fuck it. If the publishers are going to act like a bunch of fucking children then they deserve to be treated as such. I refuse to buy any console that is going to be anti-used, even if that means I miss half the good games of the generation, or more. I'll give up playing all my favorite series if it means I'm not being treated like a criminal for buying a game used or using Gamefly to get the majority of my games.

I mean this with zero offense, but I'm pretty sure they're not going to be finding out what you would and would not stand for from these forums...

I'll wait until we start to get actual information not just more rumors before I start judging the new consoles, seriously half the rumors don't even sound real like always requiring an internet connection to play anyone looking into that for 10 seconds is going to realise its not feasible theres far too many people without the internet let alone all of the people with just crappy internet for a required stable connection the same goes for the digital only idea theres simply not the infrastructure in place to make it work. Most of these rumors are just as easily debunked with a little rational thought, but people would rather ***** and moan over unsubstantiated rumors.

I think we all were afraid of something like that to happen. The question is will we do anything about it at last? Personally I stopped buying any new PC game that has DRM with it, and I play only old ones. I will not accept this humiliation as a gamer and consumer.

Sorry, but I dont see gamestop being the problem as much as they are the scapegoat. Granted a scapegoat that is making a tidy profit, but a scapegoat none the less. Thing is people really tend to forget that Gamestop is just a much a part of the industry as anyone else, but this notion is starting to tread on personally well worn ground. Ive said all this before. I clearly digress.

Thing is... In reading the comments on the article, you get this long string of people crying "Yeah, they do that, I wont buy it" But I sincerely challenge the resolve of these claims because if people actually genuinely felt this strongly about it, we would not have accepted Project 10$, DLC, Always on DRM, or any of these other negative prerequisites that is leading the industry to this point.

Sure its easy to say you wont buy it today when the new consoles havent even been announced, but its a LOT harder when the release date of The Elder Scrolls 6, CoD MW5, Halo 5, Final Fantasy XV, Dragon Age 4, Mass Effect 4, or any other big name title comes.

But I will say this, I HAVE kept myself from making certain purchases based on conviction. I basically have only bought 1 ubisoft title in the last 5 years (from dust, and had I known, I would not have) as just one example. So I know that if I claim I wont buy if it wont support used, I know I wont buy it. Which, if it DOES get to that point, Hey, awesome, Now I can work off the backlog that is keeping me from finishing up my major minecraft project.
what the? from dust was ubisoft? whew thanks for mentioning that i didnt realise i was going to get it myself
If you believe in carrot-AND-stick persuasion (like I do), then go ahead and get it. They repealed the Always On DRM. I'll buy their stuff if they make it usable. (But then again, it's a ***** and a half to set up the first time if you haven't gotten any of Ubisoft's products recently.)

Infeasibility never stopped the likes of Ubisoft.

my main worry is that as we make the transition from discs to downloads is that without competition prices will never drop. that's what makes steam work is that they have to compete with the whole internet. What I'm seeing is the xbox 72 or whatever only allowing you to buy from microsoft (as the 360 does now) but without used games and for some time box copies they will have no need to charge less the whatever they can get away with I can see 2 year old games still running for $60 simply because there is no other way to get it. I see a similar problem with this. no used games for compitition means that they can charge what they please and the games industry will never need to learn that charging many peoples weekly food budget for a 8 hour game with little replay value is not a good way to make friends.

It doesn't have to be these forums but the companies would be pretty stupid to not listen to what consumers will and won't buy.
