I don't need to tell you that the economy is not as good as it could be, so why is it that everything is costing more. On November 1 the subscription to Xbox Live will go up a couple of bucks but the only question i have is why. Microsoft says that they will continue to provide the best service on the market but if you ask me competing with PSN's free service is hard to do but Xbox has managed to do it up til this now. I have a really bad feeling that the price increase is because of Kinect which i could give two shits about. What do you think? How could Microsoft use the price increase to benefit us, the users?

They could start using online game servers perhaps? Usually paid online gaming services have those.

Peer to peer incurs no costs to the company. they should not be charging for it.

Before anyone tells me it goes towards demos and videos and hosting live arcade games... they're all available to silver users anyway, not to mention the point about live arcade games is stupid. Paying for the privilege of being able to buy games basically.

Just a guess, but it could be anything from expanding their network to they need more money to maintain their current network because people cancel their accounts to save money.

The price increase is due to Kinect, and a number of other new "features" they're implementing that most people couldn't give a crap about. Here's the text of the email I got today from them.

No, if anything they are bringing in more subscriptions.

This is really simple.

They are forcing people to buy services so that they can profit from it. If you want the base service(which SHOULD be free anyway; and IS free on PC versions), then you have to pay for all this extra stuff that you may or may not even want/use.

MS: "Hey look at all this cool stuff we got you!!"
You: "Oh, thats kinda cool I guess."
MS: "Now pay up!!"
You: "But I didn't ask for it!!"
MS: "If you want ANYTHING you must pay for EVERYTHING MUAHAHAHAHA!"

The design and networking features of your multi-player games requires developers and coders and designers on MICROSOFT'S part to keep your games up and running. Yes, it is a Pseudo-P2P network but even that needs people to maintain that network and make it better. To benefit YOU the consumer, they need to hire TALENTED people. Hiring TALENT isn't cheap. Maintaining a Pseudo-P2P network structure that hosts MILLIONS of players isn't cheap. Redesigning content for your Xbox 360 ISN'T cheap. The DLC that you pay the DEVELOPER for isn't just hosted for free out of the goodness of someone's heart. The bandwidth it takes for you to get that DLC at a reasonable speed isn't free. The ability to rent movies directly from MICROSOFT'S servers and the bandwidth to get them almost INSTANTLY isn't free. They have to do all of this AND still be profitable as a company. The cost of your DLC, Movies, Music, multi-player games would be 10x the amount it is now if it was charged on a "as used" basis instead of the entire cost being spread out over the entire user base, and it would make any sort of xbox live service completely unprofitable, therefore non-existent.

For all you people talking about PC multi-player being free, you are delusional. SOMEONE SOMEWHERE is paying for that server, and it's not the game developer... Do a Google search for server hosting for your favorite PC game. You'll see what it costs a clan, person monthly to host these servers you think are "free."

Well I think I read this on the Escapist, but I hear they are upgrading their mic systems. I mean the quality for xbox live chats... leave a little more to want, no? But I know it's for the Kinect... Meh.

It's ten dollars. Ten measly dollars for the annual fee and do they need a reason? What is coming out this year? Halo Reach and Black Ops and just looking at the numbers for MW2, you can see why Microsoft would think of doing this. People want to play on Xbox Live with their friends and why not try to get a couple extra bucks out them? It's a greedy move sure, but if anything, its not a dumb one.

So, people asking to be paid for a service is uncalled for? Yes, the whole "buying everything, but using only a portion" type of service is annoying, but would you rather them try to separate their services, hindering the connection abilities of it's users by diverting processing power and other essential resources just so you can save a dollar?

$5 isn't that bad. Honestly, when i heard everyone ranting about this, I assumed it was jumping up $20 or more.

It's the matchmaking service. That is where all of our subscription money goes.
