Thank you for making it impossible to explore the environment.

Hmmm, shall I take the left door or the right door? I'll go left... *surprise* Door slams shut and no way to look what's behind door number 2. Well, no problem. I'll just reload the game. Oh wait, the game gets auto-saved every minute in 1 save slot without backup[footnote]yes, you can save in another slot, but it takes ages[/footnote]. This hasn't happened once or twice... it's happened a lot.

I am not scared of an (infected) ambush, I am not scared I am going the wrong way... I am scared I am going the right way and miss out on stuff. So, I am extra careful when navigating through the environment because it might be a one way trip. Those big falls are pretty obvious. But then I went through a window, because nothing can go wrong (besides another event were I get *****-slapped around). Except when I turn around the window is suddenly closed and I am unable to return. And auto-save of course raped my progress.

Well, fuck you, The Last of Us. Thanks for ruining my game.

Normally I wouldn't care much, but it's such a shame for an otherwise good game.

Maybe keep a walkthrough handy, just so you know where to go last? I know it defeats the purpose of exploring but at least shit won't get Lost Forever

I second Johnny Novgorod. Just look at a walkthrough or, for spoiler free option, glance at one that just tells you where items/special dialogue triggers are. I use walkthroughs sometimes BECAUSE I'm too quick to explore and open stuff, like in FF12 where you miss out on the strongest weapon in the game if you explored and opened certain chests in the beginning of the game. I didn't use the many slots available to me and so I had to start all over just to avoid said exploration to get that one weapon.

You monster. I have work in the morning!

NOOOOOOOOOO! [http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/TVTropesWillRuinYourLife]

OT: Well... that sounds like complete bullshit. Disabling backtracking seems to be a big thing with AAA games nowadays and it really pisses me off. I like exploring and taking my time; if I find out I've gone the right way I normally turn back for a bit. The idea that the game forbids this irritates me.

I explored quite a lot and never really ran into any of the problems you described at all, it's amazing how people can play a game and come away with very different experiences.

If it's any consolation I very much doubt you have missed much of importance, if anything at all.

I ran into this issue too, was pretty irritating, I'm sure I lost out on some good stuff because of it. What can be said about it though?

Captcha: I can fix it, I am talented, but not that talented captcha.

Exploration and fun? Why have that when there's so much SEWIOUS DWAMA to get through? Why give a shit about how the player feels as long as you impress some kind of invisible video game oscar council?

I avoided the last of us. Don't care how good the story is, it looks like another gritty and depressing slog. I'm tired of those.

I confess to not liking The Last of Us. This is simply because I suck at stealth games.

Simply put I can get through many of them because of the the option of fighting your way out to hide again, slow progress but at least I can move forward, but in The Last of Us if you mess up a stealth section you may as well just restart then and there because you are going to get slaughtered.

After the fifth time of getting insta-killed by a clicker or swarmed by infected when trying to get through an area my patience reaches its limit.

The story up to where I am has been pretty good but I simply can't bring myself to play any more because it has been bringing me out in swearing sessions far too often.

I am genuinely tempted to just watch the 'movies' of the game on YouTube to experience the story.

I've noticed the same autosave issue but scavenging hasn't gone wrong for me as many times as it seems to for you.

I ran into a couple of stealth scenario's in the game where I'd die over and over again, so I'd save the game and take a break. When I loaded up the game again it started me off not where I saved or where the last checkpoint was, but in new surroundings AFTER the encounter I was trying to beat. Like I said, this happened a couple of times already and I haven't finished my first playthrough, once it happened right as I was about to meet new characters.

I'm still enjoying the game's writing like most everyone else but there are quite a few irritations in The Last of Us. For me it's the stealth. Sometimes I'll be in a stealth scenario where I'd prefer to slip by but it isn't clear where the room's exit actually is, or if I'm required to take everyone down before I proceed. Or how the camera gets way too close. Or how sometimes sneaking around the blinded/mostly-blinded infected isn't even an option because the developers intended more of an action-y bit to happen so they just seek you out.

I just find that the more a game challenges me and has my head banging against the wall, the more you notice the things out of your control when you fail.

I'm honestly surprised it killed the game for you. I noticed this happen to me once or twice, but it never really bothered me. To be honest, I kind of decided that the game had too much exploration right around the time I was going through my 50th abandoned suburban house.

Ugh...First of all, PLEASE don't do that "People who disagree with me sound like babies" thing. (The "sewious dwama" bit, I mean) It doesn't matter who you are, or who you're making fun of, or whether or not I agree with you. That is fucking obnoxious. You can disagree with someone without being insulting. Going out of your way to be insulting just makes you look immature, and makes an actual productive discussion much more difficult. These forums are supposed to be used for more then just name-calling.

Secondly...Look, I've never played a JRPG. I've just never been interested enough to try one out. Because of this, I don't actually know all that much about them. This is why I don't talk about JRPGs very often.

But do you see what you did? You were needlessly insulting, then ADMITTED that you didn't actually know what you're talking about. Bravo, sir. You've done the internet proud.

And yes, I did enjoy The Last of Us, but that's not why I'm calling out your comment. We could be talking about...I don't know...Spec Ops: The Line, a game I would absolutely describe as a depressing slog[footnote]Except unlike most critics, I would actually mean it in a bad way[/footnote], and your comment would still be just as obnoxious.

Did that work? I've been lurking for years but just recently started posting.

OT: I actually agree with Racecarlock to an extent but I also agree that the way he typed it was condescending and downright rude. It is akin to calling someone a "kid" online and is just a waste of space. I may not typically enjoy games like TLOU (mostly due to them usually sacrificing actual gameplay and immersion to force you on a linear path down the storyline) I also do not try to go into these kinds of topics simply to blindly insult other people. That said, I do find it disheartening how often games like TLOU seem to value linearity and "on-rails" gameplay so much. While perhaps TLOU may not be the best example here, the flood of games that take themselves too seriously is a bad trend (imo) that has been occuring rather recently. Spurts of humor mixed with strong gameplay and a strong storyline is far superior than weak gameplay but one of the best storylines of the year. In fact, the only game I can say I enjoyed whose sole redeeming factor was the story was Planescape and that is an exception to every rule.

Yeah, that's a dick move. Stuff like that can take you out of the game which from the sound of it, is the exact opposite thing the developers want.

The more I here about this game it just seems to get worse and worse. Really want to see this one for myself. I would have played it already if I wasn't saving for consoles.

In my opinion, linear games are only a little bit worse than games that force you to diagnose a 'correct' path just so you can not take it deliberately. I prefer games where you can either explore as much as you want, or feel confident not exploring and taking the path you want. This said, I haven't played The Last of Us, but apparently it is of the second type.

The best thing about game "movies" is that they're free.
I wish so much they gotten very popular to make oscar-bait games irrelevant because we can just watch them giving no money anyway.

I can honestly say I haven't run into this problem at all.

It's actually relatively easy to tell where you're supposed to go in The Last of Us to progress the story. There are a lot of subtle, and not so subtle hints given to you through certain colors, lighting effects, and etc. which tend to tell you exactly where to go, so all you have to do is refrain from going into the direction you instinctively want to.

Yeah, I know how you feel. I'm actually relatively good at stealth games, and I play a lot of them. The thing about The Last of Us, is that the stealth is really iffy. There's no cover system, no indicators, nothing to tell you whether you're going to be seen by someone or not. While this makes the game feel organic and realistic, it's also terribly annoying at times, especially since it seems that the range characters can see you at is fairly inconsistent.

Still, at least if you screw up the stealth gameplay it doesn't just force you to retry it. There have been a number of times where I just said "fuck it, molotovs" and everything worked out just fine, which I can really appreciate.

Funny how I never had that problem, and if I ever missed anything (which I most certainly did) I could try looking in different area's in New Game +.

I've played through the entire game and that happened to me exactly zero times. And I did a lot of exploring.

Not saying it didn't happen; and it does sound annoying. But it's nowhere near a game-breaking issue.

I haven't played the game but the concept that I can miss something while exploring and not be able to return to play it would really aggravate me.

It's times like this that I am glad I have my tropes safety timer. It only has a five minute count and once it beeps, I close the window no matter how compulsive the feeling to continue reading is.

It has saved my life many times over from you wicked people. My only fear is if I don't notice when the battery dies...

Yeah, I had no issue with this at all. But then unless I played Survivor I found myself quite full with scissors, tape, alcohol, bandages, etc.

Also the game makes it pretty damn clear where the area exits are, so I can't say I ever found myself getting locked out of backtracking.

And after "spunkgargleweewee" is "Oscar bait game" now the next Yahtzee copy behaviour? Ugh...
