So escapists what is your favourite detective/mystery TV show or film if you like. Mine is Psych it's got a perfect balance between mystery and humour, I love the Scooby Doo reveal and hilarious tomfoolery. Detectives are too serious.

This video is somewhat relevant has me in stitches every time, I love the Venture Bros.

Why it can only be the angel of death herself:

By the time you see her, you're already caught up in the middle of a convoluted murder plot!

Sherlock Holmes, really. Both the old Jeremy Brett episodes and the Moffat-made show.

Damn, FalloutJack beat me to it. The newest Sherlock series definitely ranks amongst my favourite TV shows of any genre.

This Sherlock Holmes:

It's PERFECT. I couldn't think of one thing to change about it. Except maybe making a better sequel (Game of Shadows wasn't bad, just not NEARLY as good as the first one)

Depends what you define as mystery media.

To me, mystery media follows a kind of flow. An obstacle to be overcome like a puzzle, a whodunnit, whatdunnit, wheredunnit.

By that definition, supernatural would count. It follows that kind of pattern, every episode a new beasty pops up and the brothers have to find out what it is, what it wants, and how to kill it, it has a mystery as the central thread of every episode, and a larger mystery within each series.

Of course, there is stretching that definition too far. Stargate could be seen much the same, but I don't think so as it usually focuses more on the action than the solving of a mystery.

Another alternative mystery choice could be "House". Replace the killer with a killer condition, and you have your mystery, as House and his team race to find and cure the "killer".

As for my favourite, I'd have to say "Monk". I relate to the character's mannerisms and problems, I guess, although I'm not OCD, just very prone to nervousness.

Either that, or going back into my bending of the meaning of "mystery" series, "A town called eureka", possibly closer to sleuth stories than the other examples I discussed due to the fact that often, there is somebody behind the circumstances, and of course, the main character actually being a detective.

I'd definitely a town called eureka as a mystery show and House too. House is an interesting one I never really thought of it that way before.

i remember murder she wrote.. they never did catch jessica fletcher for being the worlds most prolific serial killer
Anyone who caught on was just her next victim or the next person she would frame. Also yes Murder She Wrote is number 1 in my books and the theme music was great. Looking at her now Jessica Fletcher looks a lot like my mum im scared now

It mightn't fit with alot of your ideas of mystery shows but I think NCIS is a awesome one.
It follows all the ways of a detective show under the mask of modern action cop show.
I also agree with R.Downys Holmes.

Scooby Doo on Zombie Island.

Laugh all you want, it featured the Mystery Inc. gang, trying to solve a genuine case, and it had zombies and evil cat people.

Castle, because it's one of the few shows that can still legitimately surprise me with the twist endings.

I used to really like shows like Silent Witness, Jonathan Creek, Midsomer Murders, Frost, Morse etc, but eventually you get really good at spotting the killer within the first twenty minutes, and as a writer it's even worse because you know which tropes to look for. Nowadays, the only show that routinely surprises me, but isn't just pulling the killer out of nowhere, is Castle (and to lesser extent Rizzoli and Isles, which managed it three times in the last three seasons)

And of course Castle has Nathan Fillion, which makes it automatically superior to all pretenders, and Stana Katic, which makes it hotter and sexier.
