In regards to this Escapist Poll http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/18.287997-Poll-How-does-your-area-treat-homosexuality

I realised there is a bit of an ethos amongst my various social groups that goes a little like this:

"A black is a nigga untill we know otherwise."
"A homosexual is a queer untill you're our friend."
"Old Foggies go home... unless you're here for a drink, then tell us a story."

I have very close friends from all walks of life, LGBT folk, ethnic minorities, religious extermists, 43 year old single mothers, 17 year old kids flunked out of school, Emos, goths, nerds, jocks, abos...
The only largerly consolidating factor between them is that they are all Defence members, and mostly smokers (we are a social and polite bunch, unlike those disgusting non-smokers, flame-on).

BUT! We will still throw the gay, black, dead baby, you name it, jokes around. We still mock and criticise all of the stereotypes above. There is no doubt that my mates are not a fan of the LGBT community. But we have a gay guy in our group, and nobody critisises him over that.

What do you Escapists think on that?
Does a similar thing happen in your own social circles, where the Western-Cultural-Status-Quo is upheld while being subverted by its own members?

I think that's pretty cool, at least knowing there are pockets of sanity in a world driven by presumptions and the such, where people can be people and not give a damn or really have to worry about insulting someone badly because of something said.
I used to know tonnes of people from other backgrounds back in high school, only a few even remotely fit the stereotype (there were abos ther who were thieving p***** who should have been shot, but I digress.) but very few were tolerant towards things like jokes against their background. Regardless, they were human, they were people and they didn't fit the stereotype generated by the society around them and everyone knew it. No one believed they were thieves, scammers or thugs, even though they enjoyed making others who did believe it uncomfortable (which was hilarious to watch).

I personally hope to find a group of people like that once more, even a group of people which you describe would be as wonderful and glorious as the might of the sun.
I mean, I KNOW a group of people like that, but I know none personally. A disappointment, and something we all wish to change, something I won't be able to due to geographic borders. Not for a while, anyway...
It matters not. I tell myself I'm better knowing them the way I do now, and I often tell myself to let go so that I may keep the memory rather than face what they may become, what we all can become.
