Where DRM, yearly sequels, and concept stagnation stop
I see a future where indie games show much more prowess because while previously, they required executive funding to get anywhere, now they get AHEAD because they have zero executive meddling. We've seen the increased popularity of alternate funding strategies in which companies like Wolfire and Mojang have customers buy a 10%-finished alpha version of their game as an investment, and sites like Kickstarter let you pitch an idea to ordinary people without needing to show anything. No publisher involved, none needed.

Now, the common response is "Yeah, but most indie games are just fun little ideas that hardly get anywhere. Some are interesting, but I wouldn't spend hours at night playing a clan match of Braid with my friends." This is true, though the industry has been finding ways of making games look aesthetically pleasing without breaking the budget. On small screens like the iPhone, graphics can be a little sub-par, or as long as you stick to strong primary colors, it could look "better" than some brown-filled AAA blockbusters. Plus, there's the rise of free to use, professional engines like UDK, Unity, and now CryEngine 3, and more games like Hawken wowing us through visuals.

The big companies are failing, but new areas of interest are pulling the rug out from under them. Medium, well-thought visuals are replacing cinematic HD visuals, while social networks like Facebook replace the many banner ads and paid reviewers that form a marketing department.

If you don't like the way CERTAIN GAMES (do NOT read: "gaming") are headed, look elsewhere. Maybe they weren't on a huge monitor at E3, but you'll find something awesome if you're looking hard enough. Who knows; with your support, you could bring an incredible indie tactical shooter to worldwide recognition (don't believe me? Counterstrike.)

(HOLY SHIT I TYPED A LOT)
the only indie game i ever spent hours playing was minecraft.

other than that, i have never played nor seen an indie game that has tailored specifically to my wants and/or needs since most of them are mario rip-offs or pretentious beyond all belief.

when they start making free-roaming action games like Saints Row or Prototype or games like perfect dark XBLA where you can customize enemy bots to have many different kinds of faces and personalities (then shoot them), let me know.

this is why i still have faith in the AAA industry, because they are STILL making games tailored to what i specifically want. No indie game has done that yet (and besides, i stopped playing minecraft because i got bored)

People want sequels. Get over it.
Oh yes they do. I think the point he's trying to make about sequels is that they kill originality, and by feeding the companies that only make sequels, the consumers are helping kill originality. There's not even a lot of games that build upon their sequels. Well, I guess maybe DOOM...

Well...on the bright side, no more Shia Laboef or [probably] Michael Bay doing the Transformers movies! That's something to be happy about OP!

This has made me think and has made me a bit concerned. Not doomsday apocalyptic concerned, but I'm questioning where gaming is going.

Perhaps we should all make an effort to play new, interesting games?

I bought Amnesia: The Dark Descent the other day. A good start, methinks.

I think that article pretty much had it. I think that the best thing we can do, honestly, is cater to the market just enough to profit (because nothing exists in big business without profit) while still paving the way for 'real' games. And by 'real' games I mean diverse experiences that have depth and fun. You guys are gamers, you know what I mean.

If the landscape starts looking murky, I'll do what I do now. Buy the good ones, try to spread the word about the good ones, and hopefully make some of the good ones.

If it ever comes to consoles that I have to pay a monthly subscription on top of what I pay for live, I'll probably stop playing games all together.

I like aiming down gunsights...
Granted, they don't make exciting screenshots, but it's bread-and-butter gameplay. Just about every shooter is going to have an assault rifle and reflex sights seem to be the norm these days.

The endless sequels worry me more than a bit. I like sequels because the second is usually better than the first... but sooner or later you have to move on. I wouldn't mind more franchises doing like Bioshock by creating a brand and basic game play style, then completely starting over after a sequel or two. Would I love to see a third Infamous game? Yup, but I don't want to see Cole again, because his story is done.

And yet people want a new console generation.

A new generation would just make all those problems even worse.

yeah... i hate all this moving towards digital distribution... what ever happened to picking up games at the bargain bin many years after they've come out?

at this rate, when our children's children want to play games, they'll have to pay the same amount as we pay now for a new game. :,(

That's completely understandable criticism. And yes, a lot of indie games are pretty terrible. Still, I have found at least one indie game that, in standard Metroidvania style, had quite a lot to discover. I'd hold out some hope, even if you don't actively look around for good ones.

Just today, I tried to play GTA4 on Steam again. I could not. Windows Live doesn't let me save unless I log in. So, I log in, starts downloading something forever(around 15 min) and then GTA4 dies! Twice!

Or that one time I bought ME1 and could not play it because it didn't accept my code.

Or when I can't play Prince of Persia(2008) because I don't remember my Ubisoft account name or pw.

Number 5 is definitely an issue.

Yeah well Cracked is known as a comedy site. It ever so rarely makes an article that is completely true, feasible and realistic.

It was supposed to make you laugh, not feel depressed.

I decided to pop in on Cracked to check out the new articles and this one obviously got my interest.

And now I'm sad because I found myself agreeing with a lot of it. In particular, number 5 scares me the most since it seems to be the most pressing issue right now.

So, after reading, or even skimming through the list, do you agree with some of the points being made? Do you think the future of the game's industry will actually come to that?
If it does, would you still game as you do now?
ohhh look David wong is writing about Video games again

he seems to want to bring all us gamers down, he preditced a crash in 2007..didnt happen so I wouldnt take what he says so seriously, hes not worth listening too
