People are missing the point of Christmas. It's pretty much become a commercial event, with businesses taking advantage of people. A crap-load of money is spent on trivial items that will have been forgotten by next Christmas.

Don't get me wrong, i'm a fan of "the true spirit of Chirstmas", and presents are noice and all, but this is an example of the fact that people don't get it for what it really is.

Rant concludes here.

Why exactly does anyone care what other people do with their own lights, on their own property?

I can sympathise completely with the rage at the adverts starting around late october but seriously, if the people want to jump the gun a whole load and put up lights about now it's not a big deal. It just displays the fact they're idiots in bright, sparkling letters.

What they do here in Bradford UK is put lights up for Divali around september and just leave them there over Christmas till about march time. Way to go Bradford council for being cheapskates!

Just as I said in my OP, for me seeing Christmas lights around so early detracts from the sense of occasion. The time of year stops being so special when you are surrounded by these things for too long. That's why it annoys me.

Ha, a few of the girls at school are panicking because they only have 2 months and like 5 days to buy presents.

Apparently my response of "Fuck that," was not well received.

Not if you're talking on the scale of 3rd world debt or global warming, but surely you must find it at least strange that people would do this?

I guess, but I'm just not too worked up about it.

I mean, not to the extent that I think people who do it shouldn't be able to own homes.

As much as that was a joke, I do genuinely think people should be stopped from making their homes look fucking stupid to some extent. Not to mention the amount of electricity they'll waste making themselves look daft.

My lights go up the day after black friday. Always. It's how I insure decorations get put up in time and not too early. If thanksgiving is over, then it's time for Christmas lights.

Buddy, I live in Tennessee. The land where people don't even take down their Christmas lights. I do agree that putting up your Christmas lights this early is insane. Christmas shopping is one thing because this is before the crazy mall rushes but actually going out and putting up your lights this early is really stupid and only makes you look bad.

You think thats bad? The council have started putting christmas lights all over canterbury (my home town). It's fucking october! Christmas has become too comercialised and is coming earlier every year. They're basically destroying christmas. They might as well decorate the town with santas guts and entails...

Ok, a little over board but you get the idea.

Elves are nothing. I work at a Dollar Tree, and we've had Christmas decorations and wrapping paper out for sale since July. You should see the store now: Halloween stuff has it's own two little shelves amid a mass of Christmas decor.
