I shall start us off:

Bubba Ho-Tep

What I expected:
Evil Dead with Elvis.

What I got:
As awesome as 'Evil Dead with Elvis' sounds, this movie turned out to be something even better. A beautiful, subtle, moving film about growing old that made me want to hug my granny.

The Matrix Reloaded

What I expected:
The mother of all sequels.

What I got:
Keanu Reeves trying to emote and his naked ass at a fucking sweaty rave.

The Phantom Menace

What I expected:
Darth Fucking Vader

What I got:
Woefully acted emo sulking.

Edit:
Yes I know he was only a kid in the movie, I meant the trilogy as a whole. Pedantic lot, aren't we?

And about the new Avatar: Yes, Soundwave was awesome but I'm awesomer and needed a change.

Far Cry 2
What I expected: Battling mercenaries and burning grassland with a variety of interesting real weaponry.

What I got: Spending 90% of the game driving around and losing progress to the shitty save system.

I still like it though.

Expected: Pure garbage.
What I got: An alright movie.

Expected: Brilliance.
What I got: A good game, just not as good as it was made out to be.

Snake

Expected: Playing as a snake, hunting down prey and such.
What I got: A game where you eat dots.

DIRT 2
Expected: A racing game that I'd get bored off quickly.
What I got: A game that has me hooked on it.

I simply expected Leto to become Emperor.
Well, he became God-Emperor, but what I didn't expect was the whole sandtrout-symbiosis-thing. Weird.

What I expected: A good film with a fair amount of dark humour to keep me interested.

What I got: A very long feeling film with some very funny parts that was much better than I expected (apart from the length, it felt very long indeed).

Expected: An amazing game with new features and a whole new set of strategies for mass use of firearms and naval vessels
Got: A average application that rather liked making me look at the desktop.

Got: Made fun of for living in the Northern Hemisphere

Christmas
Expected: Blu Rays mainly, to be viewed on the PS3 when I got home
Got: Blu Rays and a Yellow lighted PS3, damned son of a *****.

What I expected: Slo-mo breaching and clearing, reenactment of Rainbow Six, SWAT badassery
What I got: Running around reporting corpses, handcuffing hostages and dying a lot.
Stil a great game though.

I was either expecting them to suck majorly or blow my mind.
what I got was a big bowl of bland. I couldn't even get worked up over either of them.

Killzone 2
well... okay I wasn't expecting much of this and...
I pretty much got what I expected.

What I expected:
The god among RPG's.

What I got:
Brilliant game that sadly had so much wasted potential (read: everything outside the main quest being as monotonous as can be.) that the sequel will apparently fix.

Assassin's Creed
What I expected:
One of the best new franchises of the time.

What I got:
One of the most repetitive games I've ever played, with awesome freerunning.

Spore
What I expected:
One of the most revolutionary games ever in which I could create any creature I wanted exactly how I wanted.

What I got:
An incredibly dumbed down, kiddy piece of crap, lots of wasted potential.

The Phantom Menace

What I expected:
Darth Fucking Vader

What I got:
Woefully acted emo sulking.

Did you really expect Darth Vader to be in the first of 3 prequels?! Isn't that a bit...naïve, perhaps? Plus, the emo sulking didn't come until Attack of the Clones, but you were called out on that already. Hence why it's my favourite prequel film. Sure it has the Gungans, but I take those buggers any day over Anakin's teenage angst.

His Dark Materials book trilogy (I tend to blag on about them on here, sorry guys and girls).
My ex read them and said she loved them and cried at the end. I was expecting a lovely girly story becaus eit made her cry. So i read it out of curiousity and to help me get ore things in common with her. Just somethign else to talk about really. I expected to like it becaus ei now its been succsessful, i didnt expect to LOVE it!

What got: release date still not decided (and this is 2010)
