The two most frequently heard complaints about Mirror Edge was 1) the frustrating controls which was mentioned in several reviews and 2) the game's occasions over-focus on combat.
Really? While I agree the controls could be somewhat troublesome at times, I didn't really have any issue with them. And I don't recall any over-focus on combat. I recall a focus on running the hell away from combat. Are you talking about the occasional act of tackling a guard and disarming him as the "over-focus" ? Because honestly I didn't really see it. I was playing for the No Kill achievement, so I never bothered with guns. Only time I'd pick up a gun was when I would do the disarm attack on guards, but I would instantly drop it because it slowed me down. So yeah, not really sure where the over-focus on combat thing is coming from.

I hope for something more involved than Ass Creed style free run, but something less finicky than ME1. Hoping it avoid turning it into a shooter. The first game really shone when it was about evasion.
Right, which is what I recall from start to finish, the focus on evasion.

Controls were tricky especially with first person camera. It was commented on in many of the reviews I read.

And there's a few spots where you have to eliminate guards to continue. You could go for disarms but it was often easier to go for guns. But a few spots where it depended on combat which was a weakness.

Maybe for the sequel they will add more open areas and opportunities to string together moves. Be great if you could do an entire level via parkour movies where you rarely touch the floor and rack up tons of skill points.

After reading the article I see nothing to justify the doom and gloom in the OP. Every publisher wants to expand the audience, because that means more money. I mean, seriously? This is the only real quote: "Our goal in any product is to try and grow the audience," (EA Labels president Frank) Gibeau explained. "We're definitely taking into account the opportunity to reach a bigger group of people. We think we've got the right story and accessibility that can do that." That's it.

There is literally NOTHING here that suggests milking the franchise to death, raping the franchise, or screwing over the fans of the original. Until more actual news is released, OP, I suggest taking a deep breath, calming down, and stop going on hyperbolic rants.

"Reaching a bigger group of people" normally means "replacing the features that made it stand out in the first place, with the ones from the best selling games (like CoD), making it more generic and dull".

Barbas doesn't always make posts outside of forum games, but when he does, he makes sure they're entertaining and well-reasoned.

OT: Reaching a bigger audience might mean that it's easier, it also might just mean that there will be more aspects of the game that will appeal to more people. I highly doubt that they'll be removing the challenge from the game since that was one of the things people seemed to praise it for. I never actually played the game so I can't really comment, but I have watched a speed-run of it and it was quite entertaining.

You mean this? "We're definitely taking into account the opportunity to reach a bigger group of people. We think we've got the right story and accessibility that can do that."

Well being focused is one of the reasons I liked ME so I'm not sure I like the sound of that but it's is really vague and doesn't necessarily mean easy. "Accessibility" seems to mean nothing at this point. It's just a word they throw out because it sounds good to people who don't usually play X sort of game and it sounds good to investors. It could also mean a better tutorial or slower start, it could mean giving multiples ways of doing things like improving the combat (I hope it doesn't become combat focused though) and/or not having mandatory combat like the first one had at few points (which many complained about), maybe it will have more exploration (very likely if they are making it open world) rather than being all about getting from point to point as fast as possible and it could mean working on ways to improving how the difficulty settings work in a game largely based on movement and platforming. I doubt their going to make the controls any simpler since short of making it 'hold button to run in a direction and everything happens automatically' I don't really think you can. He did mentions story so I presume they want to have one people would play the game for.

What makes this particularly amusing is that Carbine recently released the MMO Wildstar on the marketing promise of "hardcore". "Don't like this hardcore, niche appeal game? DON'T PLAY IT THEN!" the developers shouted, and the core fanbase lapped it up with glee. This was a game for THEM, not the unwashed masses who ruin everything with their dumbing down.

Jump forward a few months, and hardly anyone bought the fucking thing, and those that did fled in droves. One of the most frequently stated reasons? Game was too hardcore and too niche and completely alienated casual players. Carbine was rocked by layoffs and has had to drastically re-visit their planned content delivery schedule. Servers were merged from 30ish to 4, and one of those 4 is already moribund. A business model change or potential shut down looms on the horizon.

It's fine to not want everything to be designed with the widest possible audience in mind, but be careful what you wish for when you slaver against the mainstream. Games with too narrow an appeal tend to fall flat on their asses, particularly when those games have AAA development costs.

Didn't anita sarkeesian say the controls of the first mirrors edge were too complicated that's why she never got into the game and now EA listens to her criticism to be more "progressive" or something like that?
