Were they asking for it?

Earlier today, I went to a pawn shop to browse through their PS2 games. All of their PS2 and older games are put into two large boxes. They are sitting on the floor, shoved underneath some racks in the back of the store. The games are in the cases already. The boxes are over-flowing, with many of the games found on the floor because they are too many jammed into the box as it is.

I was going through one of the boxes, when I found a copy of Ratchet and Clank. I opened it to check how good the disk looks, and the game is gone. Of course I knew that the game was stolen, but just in case, I returned the case to an employee and asked if they might have had the game anyway.

Of course they didn't. All of their older gen games are in the cases, on the floor, in the back of the store, hidden from view, and extremely easy to steal.

So my question is: does the shop deserve their games being stolen from them? For being so careless, does it serve them right to have somebody walk in and take them? And for other things too. Does a person deserve being mugged if they knowingly walk through an unsafe neighborhood?

I'm curious about others opinions. Personally, I don't think people just deserve thievery and such if they are being careless. People should have the common sense to keep their fingers to themselves. But, the victims should really be more careful if it's just a PLAIN thing. Like the pawn shop I mentioned above. Do they deserve it? No. But should they be more careful? Yes. It wouldn't be that difficult to take the games out of the physical cases and store them somewhere safe behind the counter.

So what do you think?

No obviously not. They do not deserve it but they should be more careful with their stock even though at this point very few people buy PS2 era games.

Well no, unless they're open dicks to their customers they don't really DESERVE to have someone stealing their stuff. The sad truth is stuff like this happens.

I was at a Pawn Shop and was looking through their DVDs. They were 2 bucks each, so there weren't a lot of good ones. I did see Monsters vs. Aliens though (I heard it was alright, and hey, only two bucks) but when I opened the case it was some My Little Pony DVD

Deserve it? Depends on how expensive they are selling PS2 games. If it's more than like 8 bucks for anything, they probably deserve it. If they're as cheap as they should be, it's like 5 bucks you cheap bastard, even a 10 year old can afford that.

Private property is private property. No one has the right to anyone else's stuff in any circumstance. Now, things like patents and what not gets into far murkier waters, but if someone has bought a physical copy of a game and is selling it, then it is theirs until you pony up the cash.

No because we should live in a society where we don't have to worry about leaving games in cases in shops, or leaving our front doors open on sunny days. However we don't.

They should be more careful with the merchandise, but I wouldn't say they deserve it. Like the example of being mugged that was somewhere up there ^, no one deserves to be mugged but a lot of the people who I know that have been mugged could have done a lot to prevent it.

Pretty much this. Saying that they "deserve it" absolves the thieves of wrongdoing. And unless the store employees wouldn't know customer service if it bit them on the ass (see: the local tabletop game shop in my neck of the quite literal woods), you really can't blame anyone but the thieves.

Is it possible that the game store is being careless? Yes. But that's different.

Um... Yes. I bought a PS3 from a pawn shop because I wanted to play DCUO. I walk up to the pawn shop, and the first thing I see? Brainiac's symbol is their logo. And the PS3 makes a high pitch whistle whenever I play.

I'm not condoning steeling, but if they're gonna sell shit, they might as well get shit.
