Can I play this game with out having played the previous titles or should find a used copy of a ps3 game, always been interested in this series but jrpgs have a bad habit of this being a problem.
Shouldn't be a problem. I've never seen a save transfer so you have to start where everyone else does. The Synapsis paints this as a separate story. Even D2 which was an actual story squeal was pretty much self contained.

There is a joke in the games about needing to have played the other games to understand the story. There is a character called Asagi from Makai Wars. You can't play Makai Wars because Makai Wars is a future game. You can never play though Asagi's story because the game will never exist to play in the present.

However, you might want to try out one of the games before you buy. It is a niche title, and unless you're into turn based strategy rpg's and their brand of humor it might be money wasted.

100 characters sounds like over kill, but it's something that the PS2 should have been capable of doing. The reason to limit the characters to 10 in the past is more a mechanics issue. Saying they're going up to 100 sounds like challenging someone to 100 piece checkers. Sure it can be done, but what would be the point. More likely they made some kind of mechanics change that makes it practical to do 100 characters at once.

Then again this could be a joke with their weird sense of humor.

I all-ways enjoyed strategy games but lately RTS have been stale and there are few quality releases in that genre. Turn based seem to be the way to go these days. Fire emblem awakening is one of my all time favourite games I've ever played if that is an indication of how much enjoyment I'll get out of this game.

In general I'd say that was a good sign, but I do have a friend who loves FF Tactics who can't stand NIS Games.

Disgaea is like Tactics, Fire Emblem, or even Shining Force, but on a whole nother level. You can certainly play it casually like you would any of the others. Run though the story, and done. But there is so much more.

Things you should remember to do in Disgaea.

Deliberately Lose to bosses. Especially the first boss you run into.
Don't be quick to reset. Just because you lost the fight doesn't mean the game is over. Save at the end of the credits, and start over from the beginning.
Crank up the difficulty, and do some power leveling when you find the levels made for it.
Put the difficulty at a reasonable level when you start back on your latest story mission. You'll regret it the first time you find the enemies have 100 more levels than you.
Throw Enemies into Enemies. Do be careful
Don't be afraid to reincarnate back to level 1 into a better class. For example lets say you have a character with a base stat of 30 attack and it grows by 10% per level. If you reincarnate back to level 1 with 30 still as your base attack, but into a class that has 30% increase per level at level 10 the original class would have 70 attack, but the other class would have 318 attack.
The Level Cap is misleading. Reincarnate, and store those levels.
Throw Prinny's ?/!
