Set for yourself an hour or so of game time a night, hook your game station of choice up to a timer connected to a power source so that after an hour + 5 or so minutes to save it cuts the power to your system

How dramatic. You need to learn to prioritize your time.
This. I'm sure we've all been through school/college/university whilst juggling jobs and friends and gaming. Deleting everything you worked to achieve is not productive - in fact it is the opposite because now the time you spent gaming WAS a waste of time, you have nothing to show for it.

The thing about life is you need to learn how to balance everything. You could just have easily put your games consoles away for a few weeks/ months and then have gone back to them.

My brother is a police officer and still finds time to regularly game between the brutal hours and what sleep he can squeeze in. I think you're being a bit dramatic, which is expected since you're still a teenager.

Hmm, seems a bit extreme. But hey, whatever rocks your boat. I know how hard it can be to put down the games in favour of more important things. (Un)Luckily I learned the hard way and now I know the harsh reality of not putting the games down to work when I have to.

Still, like all things, gaming in moderation is no problem at all. Only when it becomes an unhealthy addiction do you need to start chastising. If it's become a problem, only play games in the evening, for arguments sake, and get all your work done in the day. that's what I do when I have to. If I'm out with friends in an evening, I don't even play games at all that day. It's called pacing and it works like a charm for me... when I let it work ;)

Cutting it so sharp and suddenly from your life is incredibly risky, even if it's not an addiction. you will just end up replacing it with something else that is non-productive. That and you'll be hit with depression, miserableness, boredom and any other wide range of withdrawal symptoms. So be careful with your 100%-0% cut-off of gaming.

...and this just seemed appropriate:

Good luck kid, I know how hard it is to get your ass in gear to study. You can do it though, work hard.

A2 exams? Same here buddy. It's kinda terrifying thinking that I need to get straight A's to get into my first choice Uni, and sometimes I do think about cutting out all fun aspects of my life. But then I think:

1. I probably couldn't even if I wanted to
2. Solely focusing on my academic life will just cause me to become exhausted and do worse

It's symbolic. Or metaphorical. Or something.

O.T: Well, goodbye, person I don't know. I hope you have a good life.

Hey, good luck OP. You should probably make sure that you find another way to entertain yourself on rainy days though, or else in a few months you'll get that "hmm, a few hours of Bioshock Infinite couldn't hurt..." feeling. Keep a bunch of good books handy or something.

Also, is it just me, or do some of the people in here come off as being rather bitter?
Yeah, I think some people are personally offended that their favorite medium of entertainment is being treated like an addiction. Or maybe they're just a bit addicted to it and don't want to admit it...

It ultimately comes down to balancing your life which is definitely easier said than done. If gaming consumes too much of your time and is somewhat of an addiction then maybe purging it entirely is a good idea.

Best of luck in your future endeavours. You might just find yourself coming back sooner than later...

17 and already in college? That seems early to me, considering I'm turning 17 in just a month.

Anyways, see you man. I never saw you while I was on here, but I hope that this choice is something that will help you in the long run. Hope you do well on your exams, and overall also.

Remember, we'll always welcome you back with open arms.

I'm guessing (and a check to his profile confirms) that he's from the U.K. Their "college" is more-or-less, kinda/sorta equivalent to the U.S.'s "high school."

That being said... I'm in university/college/whatever you want to call it for a few years, have been insanely busy all of those years, have had some major life crises during that time... but I always try to make a bit of time for gaming. It relaxes me, and happens to be my major stress-reliever, and one of my favorite hobbies. I don't know if just deleting everything is the best idea. Gaming can still be a hobby, no matter how busy you are. Maybe you put your gaming on hold for a bit. Or maybe you just don't play as much as you did for a little while. But I have this feeling that you're going to regret just up and deleting all those saves you deleted, OP. For nostalgia's sake, if nothing else. Going "cold turkey" is never a very good way to let something go.

But still. Best of luck to you in your life, OP.

What was the point of deleting all your saves? Surely that was just making all the time you spent on games beforehand was even more of a waste of time than you made out.

I would recommend contacting a mod to give you a ban so if you ever are tempted to come back you can't do anything, just something common I've seen happen and is understandable.

God speed good sir in your new life.

I sometimes get this feeling, but realistically if I gave up gaming, I would just replace it with something else useless like TV or reading more than I already do. Not to say gaming is completely useless or anything, I mean I' soon starting a game design course, but you probably get my point.

I did not know you but I can relate. I've had myself suspended from this site many times to get myself on task to do university work, to motivate myself to find work or to focus my creative energies on one thing. As for gaming I get the addiction. I've given my games to a friend and actually paid him to keep them until I could show him proof of having completed the final project I needed to finish to get my documentary certificate.

I'm trying to improve my willpower. I hope to be able to tear myself away from my entertainment without resorting to such measures in the future. I do not however consider my time wasted. Life is way too short to not enjoy yourself. I will never delete my saves intentionally. I do hope that you can find balance in your life to allow for both your gaming and the rest of your life to work together. As for this site? We'll be here if/when you come back.

Cheers mate.
