You need this I think. Bloody people get so hung up over the "rules" of language. You do realize they are made up as we go right? It's not science, it's not chemistry.
I know languages evolve and are effectively arbitrary (albeit necessary) forms of expression, just like most communication.

And yet, that fact does not endear me to people who want to change their daily pronouns to a specific, nonsensical vernacular for the sole purpose of making them feel special or important. That isn't helpful or necessary, it's just pretentious and stupid.

More broadly, if a word or form of syntax is needed, it can be invented. But reinventing words/forms when a perfectly serviceable set exists within a language already helps nobody, and that's exactly what's happening in the subject of today's comic.

Did anyone else's mind supply the 'Yeeeahhhhhhhhh' sound byte at that last panel?

I for one believe in equal treatment for all humans, including comedic treatment. I'm sorry you feel differently.
Its not about "equal treatment", its about who, and more importantly why they're a target for comedic effect.

You can make fun of a transgender person. They're like anybody else. If you're making fun of them because they're transgender, however, you're a dick. You can very acceptably make a joke at the expense of war veteran with both physical and psychological scars. However, its not okay to make a joke about that veteran because of those physical or psychological scars. Its why most people were okay with all the jokes at John McCain's expense in the 2008 election until SNL did a sketch that mocked his inability to raise his arms - a handicap due to the fact that he was held and tortured as a POW for years.

I should've been more clear. Its not that nobody is off limits. Its that attacking people for certain reasons is the unacceptable behavior.
Well, that's where you have to see the subjectivity of comedy.

I for one found the arms sketch to be pretty amusing. Saying such comedy is "unacceptable behavior" is an utterly meaningless statement because it's only unacceptable to [i/]you[/i]

As for this comic, I'm not sure how any of this relates. It isn't mocking Tumblr people for being transgender, it's mocking all the silly terms they come up with to describe themselves. And even then it isn't directly mocking. More so just pointing out how hilariously far it could go if certain people decided they wanted the special pronoun treatment as well.

So you're saying transgender people deserve to be mocked, on the basis of them being transgender, then? Because its pretty obvious that this is the main target of the strip.
If I was talking to someone and he\she would tell me I'm supposed use some sort custom pronoun for em, I would laugh my ass of wether theyr transsexual or not.

Thats pretty much equivalent to someone wanting to be adressed as "big daddy" or talking about themselves in third person.

Listen, guys, I'm sure it's all meant in good fun and you're mostly targeting the people who do ridiculous stuff, but you're lumping the assholes and lunatics in with actual transgender people. Even if you've decided to just assume that tumblr is full of nonsense, you should at least appreciate that you're punching down.
We like to think we punch in every direction. Like a starfish.

A starfish made of fists.
Ah but now you'll never host the Hugo's, tough luck.

And has anybody in this thread come up with actual examples of this happening? Nope, no legitimate ones. The only time I ever see somebody mocking this idea is when its dealing with transgender people, or when they're mistaking satire for legitimacy. Today's comic strip is targeting transgender people.
Actually, the target of the joke is the small, but quite dangerous, culture of tumblr users who romanticize and appropriate the trappings of mental illness, as is quite clearly demonstrated in panel two.

Well, saying that sketch is okay is saying that its okay mock somebody who received similar injuries under similar circumstances on the basis of their injury. Thats what that means.
Not sure what your point is here. I still found it funny as did other people. "Okay" is just as meaningless as "acceptable" or "unacceptable". If something makes me laugh, I'll support it regardless of the person.

This reminds me of a discussion I had with a close friend of mind. We're both athiests, but I was upset by an atheist group labeling themselves as the "United Church of Bacon", as its thinly veiled mockery of other people's genuine religious beliefs. Being an atheist, I think they're wrong, but I'm not pointing and laughing at them because they're "stupid" for having such beliefs because you aren't stupid for simply having religious beliefs. Some people, on the other hand, think its perfectly fine to call anybody who holds a religious belief an idiot and openly mocks them as them, and they're fine with it. Thats subjectivity, but that doesn't mean I have to be okay with it.
[/quote]
See, this I can get behind. You're right. You absolutely do not have to be okay with it. It's just that when you start calling things unacceptable, it sounds like you're trying to dictate what others should feel.

So the one about the ship parts was satire? Because that would be a classic example. If not that one, then the various "ph" words are also pretty easy targets.

Otherwise, I see a distinct difference between making fun of the silly words people want used and mocking the people themselves. It's a huge leap to go from "Poking fun at funny word usage" to "Targeting transgender people".

I do agree that this strip 'punches downward' but more than punch I see it as a playful tap. Were not seeking to demonize or hate, but have fun with the idea. The punchline is silly and a little cool, not an attempt to make anyone uncomfortable. I'm sorry you're upset but this was an honest attempt at being playful with the concept.

Ah tumblr, host of the worlds "Most specialest snowflake" competition. An unreasonably large portion of tumblr users need either:
A) a good slap upside the head and an extended period of time in the real world away from the internet
or
B) Serious and comprehensive psychiatric help.

There was an example posted of a guy who wanted to be called "sailing pronouns" in this very thread.
Go on Tumblr, there are people who demand they're called "somebunny" and get pissed off when you don't magically know that even though you've never spoken to them.

It's mocking the people who have to make up special new pronouns just for themselves because they're so special and unique that they can't use the male, female or gender neutral pronouns we already have:

A classic example. That you can find on multiple web pages. Attributed to multiple people.

It may not be satire per se, but it looks from every appearance like it's not sincere.

Honestly, I don't know for a fact that this is the case, but it reminds me of the number of people who jumped all over that Kotaku author for a couple of fake articles attributed to her by /b/ or some such site that was butthurt that wimminz were invading the treehouse. People held these articles against both the alleged author and the website that supposedly hosted them, even though there wasn't a lick of truth.

I don't care what anybody says, I'm using these from now on.

Anyways, OT: This strip made me chuckle, although I'm not entirely sure why CM is going all "Attack on Tumblr" recently. Probably because it has enough material for like, another month of strips (al though by then we might need a tumblr guy person of the non-binary gender/Otherkin a la Evangelion)

Also, "Starfish made of fists" is my new Critical Miss tribute band.

Also, McDicks indeed. The quality of the food and service are nothing to write home about.
That depends entirely on where said McDicks and the writer's home are. The ones here in Japan are pretty good on both fronts. Ever have a fried shrimp burger? They're pretty damned tasty.
Ebi Filet-O is rather good. I'm surprised there aren't regions in the US that have those

On the third panel the guy says "I need that ************ to sign some insurance papers."
Why is he using a pronoun there?
The sentence structure does not work.
Just try replacing it with any other pronoun, it just sounds silly.
That's because ************ doesn't work as an actual pronoun in any proper sentence. Thus, characters who speak in complete sentences would need to use "that ************."
So, her third person pronoun is "The/That ************," and her second-person pronoun is "************."

Is her first-person pronoun "Samuel L. Jackson" or "Robert de Niro?"
