What is a man?
A miserable little pile of secrets!

OT:
The answer to who we are and meaning behind us and the world sounds like something that would be important.
But just what do we do with that knowledge if we ever attained it?
How do we even validate such a truth if it were given to us?
What makes that meaning any "truer" than anyone else's self-derived meanings?

But enough talk...
Have at you!
*whoosh*

OP, I'm not sure what you were expecting when you asked for 'scientific' answers to this question. The only answer of that like that can be consistently given is "nothing", "an illusion created by the interplay of sub-atomic particles" (and hence nothing), or "We aren't sure yet but it's either somehow material or it is non-existent", or something equally absurd.

This is really a philosophical question to begin with - properly speaking, there is no place for 'I' or 'you' in scientific vocabulary.

If you want my quick answer, each of us is essentially a recursive, creative will.

I don't believe in deities, souls, or the other pretty lies weak people cling to.

Life, consciousness, memory, thought, and emotion are all chemicals pinging around in our heads. The effect can seem mystical, incomprehensible, attributable only to supernatural agency, but that is merely because the process is extraordinarily complex.

A better question would be: Is there an "I"? When you answer that in the affirmative, then you can ask who you are. I don't know the answer to either question.

Personally I am content to wait and find out at a later time in my existence, if that will happen. I'm far more concerned with issues less cosmic.
