I am normally a cheap bastard when it comes to things like antivirus programs, and always just use free programs to get the job done, currently using AVG Free and Malwarebytes. However I've recently started to think it might be worth investing in an actual paid antivirus program.
what antivirus program would you recommend? I want a program that is very effective, but that doesn't hurt computer-performance too much.

AVG is shit, I just had a virus removed because AVG didn't pick it up and kept dropping my connection. The repair center installed avast! a free antivirus program and now my computer is working much better. They told me its better than a lot of paid antivirus software like kaspersky and norton.

Yeah, I use Avast! and it works pretty well.
Been infected a few times, due to fault of my own, but the programme picked it up and sorted it.

So yeah, Avast:].

yeah AVG free doesnt have a firewall so it lets most viruses through and then detecting them when its way too late
i use Kaspersky its a solid firewall everything has been blocked by it so far (3 trojans and untrusted programs)
however i had problems with the firewall(like PC gaming for me)
and noton is decent enough :D

I use a combination of Malwarebytes (for the tough stuff) and AVG (for the easy stuff), I have a COMODO Firewall which seems to work really well aswell.

Whatever, just wash your hands.
really its a good idea to switch antivirus every few months since each one detects a little different, you might catch something that one let tho

I recommend Norton 360, though due to the resource-hogging nature of the program, McAfee Total Protection might be a more suitable choice. It's still resource demanding, but not nearly as much. NOTHING else comes close to being as protective as those two.

As for free, Avast ain't bad, but you can't complain when it turns out not to be enough. You get what you pay for.

Microsoft Security Essentials works surprisingly well but can take up quite a bit of processing power. Otherwise, you're set with AVG and Malwarebytes. Mostly.

Avast is free and damn effective, just run a scan from time to time. There is a pay version if you want some more features, and are determined to spend some money.

Personal preference: Avira AntiVir. It does pretty well on av-comparatives, so I definitely recommend it.

I've never had any problems using Kaspersky Internet Security, although I admit configuring it is something I haven't entirely grasped, it ain't easy. My sister took her laptop to a repair centre a few months back, and they advised her to go with either Kaspersky, or Microsoft Security Essentials. While the latter is free, and has good reports, I'm a little skeptical myself, as my dad installed it a few weeks before something got on his computer and completely screwed over the registry.

Currently running with same as you, mate, (MWB & AVG), and my machine's yet to throw a hissy fit, so *meh* and it still boots with the same speed as when I bought it (note, am yet to defrag it...).

I use ESET NOD32. Had MalwareBytes, upgraded to Win7, but haven't reinstalled. ESET is working pretty damn well for me.

To add a question into this thread,

I have Microsoft Security Essentials, Avast!, and AVG installed
But my computer is on fire, which one can be deleted?

AVG is bloatware, it does tons of things there's no need for it to do.

Avira/Spybot has kept my machine clear for years.

Avoid Not-on like the plague though. It's almost a virus itself.

Ive used kaspersky for a long time now an never had a issue with it, and it has never let anything nasty onto my computer yet.
