Hello to everyone at the Escapist and how are you?

So, something caught my eye recently. Or in fact, today. Something as distasteful as, placing bets on the trial of Oscar Pistorius, whether he will be found guilty or not for the alleged murder of his girlfriend. All brought to you by Paddy Power. I mean seriously, is this company just this low or are people who actually placing any sort of bet on this more disgusting?

I know someone out there some where will say something like "well, I don't see the big deal. It happens all the time". My response would be, does that still make it right? Granted, it may happen in other places but in my world, or more specific, where I am from in the UK, placing bets on a trial is actually illegal and would encourage jury rigging. The loophole to that is, as Paddy Power is willing to exploit, is that if said case is not held in the UK, anyone can place any kind of bet and wager on the trail. Any one at the placing bets or taking part in this thinking about the family at all? Nope? Well that just sounds sad really.

Comment on that story if you will.

TL;DR: So really apart from what I had brought out as an example, what are some of the most distasteful thing you have seen, or heard that just doesn't sit well no matter what different view point you look at it from.

Comment below and thank you so much for reading.

EDIT: Thank you EeveeElectro for the title. It does sound better than the original and I appreciate it. All credit goes to you. :)

Having been on the Internet for more than a decade, I could sit here typing all day about the terrible ideas and posts I've seen written, but one sticks out in particular. Some time ago I was browsing on Yahoo News, specifically an article about LGBT rights, don't remember which. One of the comments was something along the lines of 'gays are disgusting and should be executed', now if it had been alone then I would had just filed it away under the 'troll and/or bigot' section of my mind and carried on as usual but the kicker was the comment had many more 'likes' than 'dislikes' from other posters. That was the day I swore off ever taking Yahoo News commenters' opinions seriously again.

I am of the opinion that Yahoo News articles comments sections are one of the greatest hives of scum and villainy on the internet due to the fact that there is no moderation of the comments people are leaving, barring a simple swear filter. This means that every single racist, bigot and general cretin with a opinion can spew their beliefs out on there for the whole world to see.

I was reading the news about the stabbings at the train station in China and out of morbid curiosity scrolled down to the comments section. I really wish I hadn't done that, nearly 99% of the comments being spat out were along the lines of "Islam is evil, Muslims are evil and this disgusting religion should be banned" and the really depressing thing is the amount of approval these comments had and the small amount of people trying to talk sense and be reasonable were shouted down by the idiots.

The story can be about anything, for example the extreme weather we have had recently and among the comments of people going "pfft, its called winter" and "stay safe everyone" there will be one or two people going "Muslims are trying to take over the world...white people will be the minority soon".

In future I think I'm going to stick to the comments in the football stories, they are almost as bad, but at least most of it seems to be fans of opposing teams give each other stick.

Wasn't there a poster here who said that gays should be placed into concentration camps? I know he was an admitted schizophrenic, but...damn.

On a personal level, I have a friend who once tried to organize a 9/11 "Bring Your Own Planes" Jenga party. Clever maybe, but black humor is one thing. That was just...ugh.

Maybe I've just spent too much time seeing things on the internet, or I'm losing my paradoxical humor. I'm having a hard time thinking of anything.

Well I had a neighbor who bragged to me about throwing a bagful of barn kittens into his quarry back when i was in highschool... I just... Sometimes the concept of a hell is comforting to me I guess.

I watched Mississippi Burning recently and out of curiosity checked out on the internet if the KKK was still a thing. They have a site and I'm already sorry I gave them my click but good god if their FAQ section isn't the most fucked up concoction you can come up with.

I think if you reworded this to "What are some examples of distasteful things you have seen/heard?" people may find it easier to answer because I find it difficult to rack my brain and think of the WORST example.

Anyway, on here I've seen some shocking stuff and I don't even read all the comments in a thread sometimes.
I remember a user making a thread about her soon to be born baby who sadly died. I remember a user telling her she died because she didn't want the name they chose for her.
I was literally blinded by rage.
The people who comment on articles about the deaths of celebrities saying something along the lines of "he deserved it" and "why don't you talk about the thousands of people that die every day??????????" too.

If you want really distasteful though, just look at British tabloid headlines.

Thank you so much for the observation and have taken it as note and changed the title. I was struggling with the title for this topic and your suggestion works. I appreciate the help and all credit goes to you :). Thank you once again.

I've never known someone be so appreciative...

... I kid. XD But you're welcome! Hopefully you'll get a few more responses because if people have weird brains like me and can't remember what they had for breakfast this morning, it might be difficult to think of the best example they could. I know I've seen some worse stuff but there's only a few that stuck in my mind so I went for that D:

Any time I am talking with my father. Sometimes I don't even know if he is racist or just simply buying into all the Zionist/Illuminati conspiracy theories out there. In fact he is so inconsistent that I am pretty sure he uses the term "Jews" as a synonym for bankers, CEOs and rich people in general, but then sometimes he shits out something like The Protocols of the Elders of Zion (which is a fake document, cobbled together from a bunch of French political satires translated to Russian, FYI) and then I fall back to square one again...

He is the kind of guy who can literally turn anything into a Jewish conspiracy. The price of gas is rising? Well, it's obviously the Jews who want to bleed us dry this way to take away our country. There was a lynching in the countryside? Well, it's obviously the Jews who hired fake skinheads to do it to make the EU believe we are racists so that they could take over our country. There is a war brewing in Ukraine? Well, obviously the Jews orchestrated that so that they can take over Ukraine and then from then control the gas-lines and use it to economically take over the EU and take our country.

You have no idea how incredibly hard it is to live under the same roof with him... -.-

Heeeeeey, I can remember what I had for break... no wait I actually can't lol. I have seen some worse stuff too and the most recent was the one with Angry Joe doing a vlog about a fellow YouTuber that committed suicide. He was sharing his thoughts on the matter and the loss of a friend and all I saw in the comment section was, "Way to put on the fake tears joe", "Oh man the fuck up Angry Joe, the guy deserved to die", and other f**ked up comments that I just couldn't believe people would say things like that and worse, people liking it.

You mean the Daily Mail (mostly MailOnline), The Sun, The Mirror, The Daily Star and all those sorry excuse of a newspaper medium that hate anything to do with foreigners, Muslims, black people, the unemployed, the poor, women, gays and anyone that they don't see as the "norm". Yeah you are correct that they have so much distasteful material just to sell papers and yet on their websites in the comments section, they love to say "it's my right to say what I want and no one can stop me because of free speech/freedom of speech". Yeah keep thinking that readers.

Oh Lord, I decided I had to see that. I'm probably on some government watch list now, but it was so worth it.

There is so much wrong with that FAQ page I could take virtually every sentence and rip it to shreds, but I'll just state that my favourite quote is this...

Soon America will be Brown - will whites be treated as humanely by nonwhites as whites have treated them?
Because (once you've re-read it enough times to actually understand what they are saying ) when you pair it with this quote later on...

In short it means that blacks since birth are taught they are the victims of the white race and they must overcome this by any means.
Disregarding everything else wrong with that, you just admitted that your biggest fear is being treated the way members of your organisation treated black people, but then wonder why black people may consider themselves victims and harbour resentment at their ancestors treatment?

Hahaha, It's honestly like reading the diary of a paranoid schizophrenic.

Also I discovered that there are leadership positions in the KKK called the "Grand Dragon" and "Exalted Cyclops". Good lord, that's what happens when you let white people create an organisation on their own!

That seems to be a remarkable common viewpoint. "We have to keep our boot on their neck, because they might be angry with us because we've got our boot on their neck."

"Fortunately", people only ever seem to want to be in the group doing the standing on, not so much reversing who gets stood on. They're much likely to want to join in standing on one of the other groups being stood on.

"I want to take a plane and fly in the [replica World Trade Center]. Just for the lulz."-said by some idiot on the Battlefield forums

Normally, I don't really mind violent and demented things in games. Still, the fact that the people on the Battlefield forums had the bright idea to have a discussion about how "fun" it would be for DICE to put a replica World Trade Center into their game so that everyone could reenact 9/11 was rather twisted. To make matters worse, it came shortly before the 9/11 anniversary, and people were still talking about how fun it would be even with others in the thread talking about how much the idea displeased them because of what they had experienced that day. The comment above basically summarizes all of the assholes who ignored those people, but it's hardly the worst that was said.

The "Master key" and "lock" metaphor regarding the differences between male and female sexuality is one that makes my eye start twitching. Basically something along the lines of "A Key that can open any lock is a Master Key. A Lock that can be opened by any Key is a Shitty Lock."

Because comparing human behaviours to inanimate objects designed with a singular purpose makes complete and utter sense.

Are you referring to users Darth Empyrean and Darth Morbeus who named their child Leia? I recall quite a few users who said some pretty nasty things in their thread when they announced she did not survive.

Saying the worst would probably get me banned.

You know those frat-boys from Borat? When I learned that they weren't scripted, I fucking swear, I was about to flip a table onto a basket of newborn puppies.

MWhen I was in highscool, there was this club (It was a little meeting-place for people with mental or social conditions, like autism or whatever) and there was a guy there. He was like, rude, annoying, a generally awful person. Everyone else was really nice; what he was doing and who he was just simply wasn't acceptable. He also once said to me, completely deadpan and serious, "Women should just accept that they are the sexual toys of man."

Turns out, that the bible has something like that in it.

I only went on tuesdays and fridays from then on, the two days he didn't go to school.
