Lately I have been playing games with dark plots and serious tones, while fun, i would like to play something a little more light-hearted. So what are some games you could recommend for this?

Kirby! It's my favorite platforming series, and it's so cute and innocent it makes me cry.

I recommend Super Star Ultra for DS or Kirby 64 for, well, nintendo 64.

I came in to suggest kirby too .

But for the most happy -go-lucky Kirby game i suggest Epic yarn on the wii . Seriously it is so bright and colorful and happy . I challenge you to start playing that game in a bad mood , and come out still in a bad mood . Iv'e tried and failed . Everything in that game is cutsey-wootsy , from the music to the art style to the diologue . This game brightens my day . Just thinking about it puts a smile on my face .

NiGHTS into Dreams just came out for digital download. I highly recommend it. It was one of my favorite games as a kid, and the HD remake did it justice.

Only in endless mode. Time limits on later levels made me rage a bit.

Also, in that same thought train of fun gameplay and great music, Parappa the Rapper.

Saints Row... kind of.
The series has gotten more and more ridiculous, so that's fun. It also has some very serious moments, that can be very chilling. Great series.

You Don't Know Jack is also great. Very fun trivia game, but there's normally two people who do really poorly, and two people who get the questions and do very well.
You have to give props to a game that makes fun of you for playing single player.

Do you have a 360? Find Viva Pinata! It's vibrant, happy, colorful and I had a ton of fun with it.

Have a PS3, PSP or, PSV? Little Big Planet and Modnation Racers! Out of the box, LBP isn't as colorful as Viva Pinata that I remember but both games are excruciatingly malleable with lots of options to customize the gameplay experience.

Katamari games are on the two big home consoles listed above and are made up of the contents of a Japanese, manic-pixie-dreamgirl's brain (assuming she also has OCD). The gameplay of the Katamari series is easy enough to just pick up and play and compelling enough to keep most people satisfied for quite a while.

If you have a Nintendo console then...well there's a lot of happy on the 3DS, DS and, Wii. If it has Mario's face on it then you can safely assume the game is made of Happy. Starfy, Kirby, Donkey Kong Country Returns, Paper Mario...there seem to be lot more options with the Nintendo consoles if you're looking for happy, fun console games.

Other than what has already been mentioned, although I definitely throw another vote in for Viva Pinata, a brilliant game, and a hell of a lot of fun.

The Lego games are a ton of fun playing split-screen, Indiana Jones and Star Wars in particular.

I have also been playing a fair bit of the Rovio game Bad Piggies lately, and that is also a ton of fun and very light hearted. Also you can get a lot of the game for free which is awesome.

Donkey Kong Country Returns on the Wii is exactly what you're looking for. It's legit one of the best games of this console generation.

Telltale's Sam and Max or Tales of Monkey Island.
What he said and try out the Monkey Island HD collection. If you have a pc and no problems with pixelated graphicstyles try to get your hands on all the old Lucas Arts adventures.

Or something like Rayman Orgins and i recently tried out the Joe Danger 2 demo (psn, live), great light hearted fun for all ages.

De Blob and de Blob 2. Fun, colourful, and awesome music that is dynamically linked to the action. The first one is a Wii exclusive, the sequel is on the other consoles.

I knew the people here wouldn't disappoint. I had every title in mind clicking on this thread and they've all been mentioned. I don't even bother with the "ninja'd" anymore. I love games like this, anything that keeps a smile on your face just because of the art/colors is a nice change of pace. I suppose I'd add...

Super Mario Galaxy 1/2 is bright, colorful, and happy (and I find the lumas cute)

Flower, Kirby's Epic Yarn, Eternal Sonata (although the gameplay isn't so great IMO), and remember Kameo back when the 360 came out? I think that might qualify.

Pikmin if you have a GameCube or Wii! Love those games. Very colourful. The Pikmin themselves are very endearing!

That said, getting your Pikmin devoured and otherwise slaughtered by enemies is the most heartbreaking thing ever.
