What are some gaming 'icons', companies, 'opinions' and/or famous games you hate?

I don't really hate any game or company, that would just be sad. But I really dislike XBL, not the service it's self but just being charged for it, glad I don't pay it. I find the way people try to justify it to be even more asinine, "oh it's the best" or "oh we get cross chat and COD map packs 1 month early"...like really? That's it?

But in the end that's their opinion and they are entitled to it. And I respect it even if I do disagree with them. Also I happen to enjoy both All-Stars AND Smash Bros, I hate how so many gamers are so black and white about everything and refuse to play a game because it's on a platform they don't own.

Oh and I think Halo is overrated, but I don't hate it.

OT: I dislike Mario. He's fat and probably smells bad. Also his games haven't really wowed me since the very first. And even then I think I only liked it because it was one of the first games I ever played.

But to the commandeered topic where we talk about happy stuff instead: I love DA2 a lot for reason I'm not sure I even understand. And Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines. That game is just like, the most perfect thing in every way once you get the community patch. Everything else was already mentioned: Alpha Protocol, Mirror's Edge, etc.

"Opinions" wise, I dislike the common opinion that ME3 sucked because it didn't. It really, really didn't. But an opinion I think should be held more: "ugh I am just so disgusted at how every female character is treated and I really wish developers didn't feel like they had to pander to the male gender this way. Certainly men are smart enough to appreciate a game where women wear sensible clothing." instead of the age old "It's their art, if you don't like it don't play it."

Even if a dislike or have no interest for a videogame/company, etc. I never get passionate enough to hate it, so I'm probably just going to write what the opposite, things that I really like rather than what I hate:

Icon: Master Chief, since he's the only video game hero in the last 10 years that's reached the same status as Mario and Pac-man in terms of how recognizable he is. I've seen people who don't play videogames who at least recognize him when they see a picture or something.

Company: Obsidian, they're one of the few developers who can craft such great stories and worlds even if their games are not the best, gameplay wise.

Opinion: Some games can stand on just their multiplayer. Yes singleplayer is important, but there are certain games that exist solely for multiplayer (Team Fortress 2 for instance) so I've never bought into the whole "games must stand on their singleplayer argument"

Nintendo. Or to be more precise, Nintendo's fanboys and their hypocrisy. Seriously, we keep complaining about new Call of Duty, but when new Mario or new Pokemons come out it's like second coming of Jesus! What's the freaking difference between making more CoD or making more Marios and why's one evil incarnate and another is pure and solidified good?! GRAAAAWHAHRAH! Mind though, I have nothing against Nintendo games or Nintendo as a company, to be honest, I've only played some old Mario and very first generation of Pokemon back on GameBoy, and I enjoyed them.

I have less than flattering things to say about Valve, but for the sake of not being quoted to oblivion and avoiding mod wrath, I won't say them.

Something positive:

The Cybertron games from High Moon are raw awesome. I used to think it was strange this place never talked about them, then I remembered what website I'm on.

The casting's excellent (which made me play them), and their shooting galleries/maps are really good. While War for Cybertron was short and kinda repetitive, Fall of Cybertron fixed almost all of that while throwing in a lot more substance and gameplay additions that actually make sense. I hope High Moon continues the series on Earth and goes back to Cybertron in a future game.

Also, Master Chief. He is first character from last generation to reach Mario in terms of how many people recognize him , even if it's just his helmet and not his name.

I don't say I "hate" things because I'm one of the old fashioned types that uses the word "hate" to express a feeling that would entail I cannot physically stand, like a vampire to garlic, or a YouTube commenter to logical arguments. However, there are some things that do cause me to sigh and roll my eyes.

First, there is Kratos and the God of War series. I can understand the appeal (angry man is angry- angry man goes out and smashes shit up), but what I can't stand s when I see God of War fans and the God of War marketers try to make Kratos sound like some kind of dynamic, fleshed out character (case in point- the promo they've been running for God of War: Ascension). The same can also be applied to the Gears of War and Halo franchises and their marketing but in regards to Kratos and God of War, it just feels all the more insulting.

Next, I would also like to give a shout-out to Nintendo and their staunch unwillingness to give up this pattern of making these wild and crazy innovations (A portable handheld with two screens? Video games played with motion control?) and then use it to sell us... the same damn stuff. That isn't to say all Mario games are the same, or all Zelda games are the same, but for every console since the N64, it's been a drip feed to see any new, exciting games. You get a new Mario and Zelda game per console (two if you're lucky), maybe a new Metroid game. You might see a Donkey Kong game, but it'll have to have some kind of gimmick to it. If you're really good, there might be a Star Fox or F-Zero game. And of course, there will be a Brawl game, rife with nostalgia of previous games and consoles of yesteryear, to inflate the worth of where we are now.

And finally, although I have intentionally been keeping mum about this topic, but I have to say all the white knights in the politics in gaming have become increasingly aggravating. Yes, there are some underlying currents of sexism, racism, and otherwise juvenile thought processes in gaming. It doesn't make it right, nor does freaking the hell out over every single time a game transgresses on your perceived idea of social perfection. I really want to write more on this, but it could go one for a few more pages worth, but I fear it would become too long in the tooth.

Other thanthat... whatever the hell they did to Chris Redfield. Damn.

For love...

Icon: Gotta go with Pikachu. It's an adorable electric bunny with a lightning bolt tail, and he's fun as hell to play in Smash Bros. Plus, my Surfing Raichu was awesome in Pokemon Yellow (trade it, evolve it, trade it back).

Company: From Software has stolen my heart with Demon's Souls. I'm playing through King's Quest 2 right now, and it's awesome. Can't wait to start playing Armored Core.

Opinion: "I don't like what the company is doing with this game, so I'm not going to buy it OR pirate it. Instead, I'm going to buy a better game and reward the company that made that game, because there's ALWAYS a better game out there than the one you hate."

I agree with shrekfan here.

Let's see here:

Gaming icons: I've always been kinda partial to Kirby for some reason. There's just something endearing about a small round pink thing who happily inhales creatures to copy their abilities, giving him the power to commit genocide against everything that happens to be walking in his path. :)

But yeah, his games seem to have a special charm to them.

Companies: Reverage Labs/Lab Zero Games have created a pretty awesome game in the form of Skullgirls, and have garnered quite an awesome fanbase if the Indiegogo fundraiser is any indication.

Opinions: "Games aren't all getting easier, we're just getting better at them" While I can agree games have become more accessible for new comers, I think that the majority of us find certain games easier because of experience.

Famous Games that I love: Shadow of the Colossus, Final Fantasy IX, Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater. ect.

I'm so glad there are people here trying to make this place more positive. I was sorta getting tired of seeing all these hate threads.

I really loved the Cybertron games, but I was left feeling incredibly disappointed by the ending of FoC. Especially after how absolutely awesome everything leading up to it was, culminating in one of the coolest end-game levels I've ever seen in an action game, and then the actual ending is just... a puff of smoke.

So for that I really do hope they don't get crushed like Activision did to Radical with Prototype 2 (evidently Radical is no longer actually closed, but what comes of that remains to be seen), because I would love to have some more resolution to the story and get some more amazing Transforming action with maybe more real use for the vehicle forms.

OP, this thread is stupid. And that's all the negativity you'll get from moi.

On a different note, I'm really enjoying Red Faction Guerilla at the moment. I find it endlessly entertaining to experiment with the destruction physics, driving a truck with explosives into someones living room, and use the sledgehammer to make door openings where there are none, packing a building with explosive canisters and blowing everything to pieces. I can't believe I overlooked this bundle of fun!
The fun only increases once you get the JETPACK.

Red Faction Guerilla is indeed criminally overlooked. Yeah, the story and characters are are so nonexistent they almost collapse into a blackhole, but the controls for both the character and the vehicles are terrific, and the destruction gameplay is simply smashing good fun.

Taking buildings apart bit by bit, hearing them creak and bend under their own weight, and feeling the rumble in the controller of the imminent collapse. It still gives me butterflies in my stomach. And all this during the middle of a fire fight.
I just got the jetpack. It's fun, though I had expected it to be more.. WOOSH. But still useful though.

This game is like therapy to me. I don't have to pay attention to some elaborate story, complicated combat mechanics, or even my health bar most of the time (Mason has machinegun fire for breakfast, apparently). Just a hammer, a lot of things that go boom and a sandbox structure

I don't think Shadow was half bad. Heroes on the other hand...

From what I've seen of Unleashed, it's actually pretty damn great. I played the daytime levels when they were ported onto Generations and they are awesome and I don't mind me a G-rated God of War. I didn't have the chance to play it because I didn't have any consoles 'till this winter.
Well, to each their own. I don't mind Shadow too much. When it works, it's really fun. My main issue is that the level design doesn't match the kind of speeds Shadow hits, it feels like you're stopping and starting constantly. Or maybe I just suck.

"G-Rated God of War" sums it up perfectly. I think it just wasn't what people wanted out a Sonic game (and understandably so). Taken on their own merits, most of the Werehog levels are really fun.

I agree. All the way up to the post-final boss cutscene, it was great.

They should have put this at the end.

It would have changed the "that's it" feeling to an "oh, come on!" feeling that we got from the cartoons.

Well, the games seemed to sell well enough, and Fall of Cybertron sold better than WfC did, so High Moon's probably safe.

A race portion would be cool. Like having Jazz race against Breakdown to get to a beacon or something.
An air race would be cool, too.
