I don't say I "hate" things because I'm one of the old fashioned types that uses the word "hate" to express a feeling that would entail I cannot physically stand, like a vampire to garlic, or a YouTube commenter to logical arguments. However, there are some things that do cause me to sigh and roll my eyes.
First, there is Kratos and the God of War series. I can understand the appeal (angry man is angry- angry man goes out and smashes shit up), but what I can't stand s when I see God of War fans and the God of War marketers try to make Kratos sound like some kind of dynamic, fleshed out character (case in point- the promo they've been running for God of War: Ascension). The same can also be applied to the Gears of War and Halo franchises and their marketing but in regards to Kratos and God of War, it just feels all the more insulting.
Next, I would also like to give a shout-out to Nintendo and their staunch unwillingness to give up this pattern of making these wild and crazy innovations (A portable handheld with two screens? Video games played with motion control?) and then use it to sell us... the same damn stuff. That isn't to say all Mario games are the same, or all Zelda games are the same, but for every console since the N64, it's been a drip feed to see any new, exciting games. You get a new Mario and Zelda game per console (two if you're lucky), maybe a new Metroid game. You might see a Donkey Kong game, but it'll have to have some kind of gimmick to it. If you're really good, there might be a Star Fox or F-Zero game. And of course, there will be a Brawl game, rife with nostalgia of previous games and consoles of yesteryear, to inflate the worth of where we are now.
And finally, although I have intentionally been keeping mum about this topic, but I have to say all the white knights in the politics in gaming have become increasingly aggravating. Yes, there are some underlying currents of sexism, racism, and otherwise juvenile thought processes in gaming. It doesn't make it right, nor does freaking the hell out over every single time a game transgresses on your perceived idea of social perfection. I really want to write more on this, but it could go one for a few more pages worth, but I fear it would become too long in the tooth.
Other thanthat... whatever the hell they did to Chris Redfield. Damn.
