In College my friends and I would play Quake 3 Arena a lot on the PC's during a boring lesson like Key Skills, Maximising Potential or Work Based Learning. I tried CS1 with them one time but my god that was so boring.

We were pretty crafty because we'd copy them off of our USB's so even if the PC's were ghosted we'd still be able to play. Ahhh good times~

You need Super Smash Bros Melee. And perhaps Mario Kart Double Dash.

Call of Duty is actually pretty good for splitscreen giggles, slap it on, 4 player splitscreen and fill it up with bots to avoid the pissants online and have a laugh.

Sonic & All Stars Racing Transformed on the 360/PS3/PC/Wii U is actually a bloody fantastic racer with tonnes of modes and stuff and generally proves to be a hit with most who play it splitscreen, it's easy as hell to just pick up and play it and it lacks any of the obnoxious bullshit from mario kart.

Since you have a PS2 I'll go ahead and recommend that you pick up a copy of SSX On Tour, it only supports 2 players but there's cheats to unlock all the stuff to play with, and the mountain freeride basically lets you dick about, or race down from various points on one huge open mountain and make your own rules and such. Easily one of my favourite PS2 titles for splitscreen.

Resident Evil5 and 6, as maligned as they are, are very fun 2-player co-op shooters. Lost Planet 2 is pretty maligned too but can be a lot of fun in co-op. Once again it's mostly the dicking about factor and taking the piss. A friend and I spent a good half hour questioning why the last boss of Resi 6 is basically a bioorganic terminator, a chimera, godzilla, and mothra all in one....

Oha nd Resistance 3 on PS3 is great co-op and online supports slitscreen too, good survival mode though thats DLC.

My PC recommendation is Civilization 5. Get a few friends in a room for a small lan party, team up with each other and let the chaos ensue.

Aw man, PS2 with a multitap, brings back so many good memories...

TimeSplitters 2 and/or TimeSplitters: Future Perfect - The pinnacle of both co-op and versus FPS (everything except co-op up to 4 players).

Bombastic - The most lovingly hectic puzzle game I've ever played, up to 5 players!

Champions of Norrath and/or Champions: Return To Arms - Classic Western RPG fun for up to 4 players.

Amplitude - Guitar Hero without the silly peripherals, with more electronic music and with an awesomely competitive multiplayer mode up to 4 players.

Twisted Metal: Black - Co-op for 2, deathmatch for 4, car combat fun for everyone!

Mashed or Mashed: Fully Loaded - Identical games, but Fully loaded has some extras; car combat mixed with racing, one of the most addictive 4-player games ever!

The CoD games are actually one of the best options for modern couch based multiplayer, especially the Treyarch made ones with zombie mode. Guitar Hero got a lot of play when I was living in the dorms too.

Since you've got a Gamecube and a PS2, you could also get the Timesplitters games, which are ridiculously good.

Tf2 and L4D (1 or 2) are good options. They aren't splitscreen, but if you have your console/PC's in the same room then it can be pretty fun to play these with friends in person. Similar with Borderlands 1/2, and Starcraft/Red Alert (Any, although Red Alert 3 is my favorite, just for having a good sense of humour).

I've also recently started to play Van Helsing and it's pretty solid, basically Diablo 2 except better but with no class selection.

a great game i found, was to load up a version of COD (one with private servers or split screen), and do a 1v1 in the smallest map possible, with shotguns only. really really fun IMO, i used to do it with my mate and COD4 on shipment. easily convert it to a drinking game, every time you die, have a drink while you respawn.
